Krauthammer: Effort to defund Obamacare ‘really dumb’
Daily Caller ^ | 12:14 AM 07/27/2013 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 07/29/2013 2:08:22 PM PDT by Olog-hai

On Friday’s “Special Report,” Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer went against the conventional wisdom of some in the conservative movement by arguing efforts to defund President Barack Obama’s 2010 health care legislation at the expense of shutting down the federal government was “really dumb.”

“Never issue a threat you’re not prepared to in the end honor and deliver on,” Krauthammer said. “And if the Republicans imagine they’re going to either stop the funding of the government or refuse the raising of the debt ceiling, they’re out of their minds. It would be a catastrophe in the end. All the president has to do is wait and they’re going to cave.” …

As I read it he's merely saying that the congressional GOP does not have the balls to follow through, so they should not make idle threats and make themselves look foolish when they back down.

What exactly is incorrect in that analysis?

Guys, it's all tactical. It's about means, rather than ends.

Krauthammer probably shouldn't have said "stupid," but disowning people over tactical disputes is kind of silly.

[[[don’t know the guy from adam, but i’m guessing he’s a libertarian republican.]]]

Krauthammer is a social liberal, but he cleverly uses conservative lingo. He’s on the as record pro-choice, but passionately denouncing Roe v. Wade. Not because he’s really pro-life, but because he thinks the states should decide rather than the Supreme Court. Which is pro-choice because most states go that way.

Same for homosexual marriage. He’s for it, but thinks the states should decide. Which means — as the Supreme Court recently informed us — that the gay states will impose their marriages on traditional marriage states.

Krauthammer makes all these nice little distinctions, but in the end, he’s a social liberal. He strongly supported the decadent adulterer Giuliani in the 2008 presidential race. He told social conservatives to “grow up” and support Giuliani.

Let me try this again — this time not so garbled!

As you suggest, Krauthammer is a social liberal, but he cleverly uses conservative lingo. He’s on the record as pro-choice, but passionately denounced Roe v. Wade. Not because he’s really pro-life, but because he thinks the states should decide rather than the Supreme Court. Which is the same as pro-choice because most states are.

Are people here even reading his whole argument? He's not saying that Obamacare is the idea of a lifetime. He's pointing out tactics and the huge problems of the Republicans threatening several motions, then failing to follow through in any of them. We've seen this time and time again, then when someone like this guy points out our political flaws and failings, people start jumping on him. Face it, he's right, as we don't have the guts to go through with the threats that we're making.

The real intent. Making a show of conservatism while holding liberal crossed fingers behind one’s back, i.e. on the part of House GOP-e congressmembers. If we don’t recognize that show for what it is, then we really are asleep.

His argument is using the presumption that all members of the GOP are conservative and are merely cowardly in the face of the leftist agenda. It’s not the case—the GOP-e are fully complicit in that agenda.

I cannot believe how weak and cowardly my former political party has become. /facepalm

Become? Please enlighten me on the time period in modern history that the GOP has been tough and aggressive?

It certainly wasn't the 50 years the Democrats ran the House, where Republicans led by the likes of Bob Michel played nice ALL the time. Other than Reagan, former Republican Presidents Ike, Nixon and Ford may as well have been Democrats. Heck we got price controls, the EPA, etc out of Nixon. The Bush's? Please. Jr. gave us a whole new entitlement and spending most Democrats would be proud of - and this with a GOP congress most of the time.

This is about as tough as the GOP has ever been in our lifetimes.

The bottom line is the GOP WILL cave on this in the end. Obama will almost certainly win a government shutdown, and therefore Kraut is probably right. I'm fine with making a fight out of this, but it isn't hard to see how it will likely play out.

Yawn.............

They will go to the cliff, the MSM will say women and children hardest hit, Obama will act tough, Boehner will get a minor concession and the media will call him courageous.

Obama will be the grand bargainer and in the end, the debt ceiling will go up, Obamacare will be funded and the next day someone will say, “ look, squirrel” and everyone will forget about it for another year.

Corrections welcome, but I've never heard Obama guard dog Krauthammer mention that the states have never delegated to Congress, via the Constitution, the specific power to regulate, tax and spend for public healthcare purposes. In fact, the Supreme Court has repeatedly clarified that the states have never delegated to Congress the specific power to regulate, tax and spend for public hearthcare purposes. This is evidenced by the following excerpts from Supreme Court opinions which been posted to other threads in case some freepers have missed them.
"State inspection laws, health laws, and laws for regulating the internal commerce of a State, and those which respect turnpike roads, ferries, &c. are not within the power granted to Congress (emphasis added)." --Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

"Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States." --Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

"Inspection laws, quarantine laws, health laws of every description (emphasis added), as well as laws for regulating the internal commerce of a state and those which respect turnpike roads, ferries, &c., are component parts of this mass." --Justice Barbour, New York v. Miln, 1837.

“Direct control of medical practice in the states is obviously (emphasis added) beyond the power of Congress.” –Linder v. United States, 1925.

Yes he is... listen to Mark Levin tonight. He is explaining that we can defund obamacare with one simple amendment attached to a large bill like the one that the republicans will pass to raise the debt limit for lord obama. Now whether it would pass a veto or not is questionable but like Mark is saying tonight... krauthammer and the rest of the gop/e would never have gone along to fight King George because the “numbers just didn’t add up”. We must start to do the right things... because they are the right things to do... and quit worrying about losing. Losing is something that the gop/e have down pat. krauthammer was born and raised a dimrat... he worked for carter and mondale and was anti Reagan as much as a person could be. He still is IMHO.

They should only fund it if Obama is required to implement ALL the provisions.

I think that charles is saying it is dumb for them to try to stop obamacare because they will either not follow through or obama will veto it and they will not be able to overide that veto... but if they don't try at all... isn't that a guarantee that they will not pass a bill defunding it? Mark Levin spent an hour on this tonight and he laid out the exact simple bill that can be attached to an upcoming bill raising the debt limit (and the rinoids will pass one) and it can be done. Let obama shut down the government... it will be by his veto and on his order. I think Mark is saying the the worthless gop/e will not do it because they are spineless cowards... but the difference between chuckie and Mark is that Mark says do it anyway because it is the right thing to do.

If this group of republicans were living in the late 1700’s... we would never have gone to war with Britain for Independence because they had the LARGEST STANDING MILITARY AND NAVY IN THE WORLD and the “NUMBERS DON'T ADD UP”. boner would sue for peace. I think that Mark is correct.

I agree with you.. If the Government shuts down, and the MSM gets on a roll, the GOP will lose any chance they have in the midterms.. They can’t overcome the wall to wall beating the media will unleash..

If you stop and think of how it will be seen by the low info voters that don’t get the check in their mailbox on time.. Remember there has never been as many takers as there is right now..

Don’t start a fight you know you can’t win unless you have a plan that only losers can take the high ground, unless pity is your goal..

I wasn’t disagreeing with your comment about governing, just using it as a staging point. They don’t need to govern, they need to prevent us from being governed.

2. You can do a lot of things when you only hold the House, but governing is not one of them.

One thing you can do when you hold the House is control the purse strings. And that is what this is all about.
