The mother of Trayvon Martin said Monday that she believed Floridas Stand Your Ground law played a role in her sons shooting death, but she wasnt ready to support a boycott of the state for not changing the self-defense law.
The thing about this law is I just think it assisted the person who killed my son to get away with murder, Sybrina Fulton, the mother of the 17-year-old from Miami Gardens, said at a National Bar Association event in Miami Beach.
I think we have to change these laws so people dont get away with murder, she said, adding that her son was unarmed and peacefully walking back to his dads place when he was initially pursued by George Zimmerman.
Zimmerman successfully pleaded self defense in the killing. A jury acquitted him on July 13 in Sanford.
But the exact role of Stand Your Ground in the case isnt clear. Only two jurors have spoken up to CNN and ABC, and just one referenced the law, which allows a person to more easily use deadly force without having to first retreat in a confrontation.
Zimmermans legal team didnt focus on mounting a Stand Your Ground defense, however, saying that a common self-defense justification was all the 29-year-old man needed because he reasonably feared that Trayvon, who jumped him, was going to gravely injure him during a fistfight.
The National Bar Association, echoing calls from the Dream Defenders protestors occupying a part of Gov. Rick Scotts office in the state Capitol, has called on Florida lawmakers to repeal or amend the law....

You mean “death”, not “murder”. “Murder” has a specific definition, which this does not fulfill, so it wasn’t a “murder”. Therefore, no one could “get away with murder”.
Pimping out her sons death for a little liberal money. Yeah, she is loving him now. Too bad she did not love him enough to raise him right then.
she is what is infesting our government employees.
Imagine not being someone she “likes” and trying to obtain a government service/permit!
Stand your ground . . . Stand your ground . . . Stand your ground . . . Stand your ground . . . Stand your ground . . . Stand your ground . . . Stand your ground . . . Stand your ground . . .
I hear an echo!
“Liberals ARE dumber than a box of rocks, aren’t they. They can’t even argue on the proper issue, can they?”
Consider that Libtards (to use their correct name, IIRC) know what they are doing and used the demise of St. Skittles to attack the SYG laws and widen the racial gap.
If she believes people should be forced to run from criminals then she should believe the death of her son is her fault for not teaching him that instead of him attacking Zimmerman.
No doubt that SYG did help Zimmerman get away...with his life.
“Trayvons mom: Stand Your Ground helped Zimmerman get away with murder”
Rapidly becoming the Cindy Sheehan for the anti stand your ground crowd. Like Cindy they will discard her like used toilet paper when they have no further use for her.
Imagine - not even paying enough attention at the trial of the man who shot your son to know what the defense was.
It would probably be more enlightening to listen to random conversations in a real bar.
No, they’re evil. They want potential victims disarmed and put at risk by the “rules of engagment.”
The opinion of travon’s mom does not interest me.
Sorry lady but preventing a two bit, street thug from busting open your coconut is not really murder. I would have done the same thing Zimmerman did and I’m no murderer.
In other news: Mrs. Martin has just been awarded the Nobel Prize for Nonsequiturs.
“you can dig a hole to retreat from your attacker.”
I remember a case, and I will get it mostly right:
A woman retreated to her basement, was pursued (through a locked door, I think), retreated to a corner, was pursued, and then shot the pursuer.
Her problem leading to prosecution? Well she “chould have climbed out one of the basement windows.”
sorry your kid died lady but he was a thug.
He was casing the neighborhood to rob.
He attacked a neighborhood watch and got shot dead.
Guess he shouldn’t have attacked Zimmerman,
oh well.
I think many [including Trayvon’s Mother] who think that Zimmerman should have been convicted believe that it is perfectly reasonable to attack someone merely because they are watching — and even following — you go through their neighborhood. To run away or call the police would likely be considered a sign of weakness in Trayvon’s milieu. He obviously was raised by people who think this way and conduct themselves accordingly.
Let us consider that such people consider being “disrespected” to be sufficient grounds to take another person’s life. But defending oneself from an attacker is unacceptable.
To handle the inevitable conflicts that will arise with others peacefully and civilly is beyond their capacity. They expect others to adhere to their might-makes-right value system.
Well, I’m sorry to say, but we are not going to do the chivalrous thing and take our beatings — or lose our lives. Law-abiding citizens are armed in this country and rightfully so. Expect to be shot if you are waving sharpened screwdrivers in our faces on the subway — or beating our heads into concrete.
Not initiating violence is always an option if this value system is not appealing.
If those who are not capable of behaving like civilized human beings engage in behaviors that ultimately costs their lives, I daresay the world is well rid of them.
PHONY SCANDAL, Sybrina.
The attorneys need to have a quiet conversation here. As in, “knock off the murderer talk or the slander suit is on the way.”
