Was he under Petraeus’ influence at the time?

No, we receive a blessing for backing Israel. And we receive a curse for not backing Israel - kind of like what has happened since 2009.

VERY well said Hoodat.

I am getting sick of Fighting the Muslim Brotherhoods wars.

Doing what is right is very rarely what is popular.

Especially if it has to do with protecting Jews

Israel should change it's name to Kosovo South, THEN we will see the support come in.

He’s certainly not incorrect, but I wouldn’t lament the situation. I can understand his frustration as CENTCOM’s commander since he would have to deal with hajis day in and day out who hate Israel and us for associating with her.

Oh well.

The reason being is that there seems to have been a shift in attitude somewhere. Cutting off supplies was wise if that was him. I think Mattis and Netanyahu should sit and discuss things.

I’m not sure. This was a long time ago in the first couple of years after the invasion of Iraq (if that was him). The story is an old one.

I don’t think there’s a shift in attitude at all. His whole focus as a commander in Iraq was to ingratiate himself with the Iraqis who lived in the area where his troops were stationed. He knew that the only way to govern them effectively was to provide a measure of protection and basic services for them, but also to be brutally harsh when the U.S. personnel who were there as “benefactors” for the Iraqi civilians were targeted for attacks.

The general was instrumental in developing U.S. counterinsurgency doctrine, outlined in Army Field Manual 3-24, Counterinsurgency, that played a key role in Iraq and Afghanistan. The doctrine requires troops to be “nation builders as well as warriors” and emphasizes recognition of cultural sensitivities, placing a premium on building trust with indigenous populations. Mattis penned the manual with retired Army Gen. David Petraeus.

Chesty and Mattis are made from the same cloth. There isn’t a Marine out there who has served under Gen Mattis that wouldn’t crawl through hell dragging 10 gall gas cans if he asked them to do it. This man truely loved his Marines and they knew it. He had their unquestionable loyalty, and they had his. Bash him all you want, but you have no idea what your talking about. Gen Mattis is a true warrior.

.....I’m most reluctant to criticize a Marine 4 star General normally. After all, there have only been 68 of them in the Corps 200 plus years existence. But, for perspective, I went back and reviewed his bio. One thing stands out and that is actual combat. If you read Chesty Puller’s bio you just go wow at the amount of combat the guy was involved in! In Mattis’s bio, I committed eyestrain trying to find ANY combat. Maybe he has some but it does not jump out at you. I remember that Eisenhower did not have ANY and I don’t believe Bradley did either. And, they both were great generals.

With the foregoing perspective on Mattis, my problem with Mattis’s Aspen remarks are two: # 1 If the entire country of Israel down to the last Jew moved to an island in the Pacific, the muzzzlums would still be after them and then would commence another 500 years of endless negotiation/murdering to expel them from the Pacific island. # 2 uh..General Mattis, the people you and Obama love to support routinely execute women, beat women, rape women, allow full grown men to marry and seduce babies, blow up babies with bombs, stone women, shoot women in the head, cut the heads off live Americans, and the list goes on and on.

Given the facts sir, why in the hell would you be on these peoples side on the slightest detail. Until THEY change THEIR ways they do not deserve the slightest consideration of our nation. They are sub human. Consider this “change your ways” point negotiation point # 1 !!!!!

Deluded, biased, and likely an anti-Semite, as well.

Even a “moderate” muslim who supposedly favors America is a blood enemy of Israel.

Israel truly stands alone.

“I paid a military security price every day as the commander of CentCom because the Americans were seen as biased in support of Israel"

One of our biggest mistakes is being scared of a little word like "biased". I'm prejudiced against young black males who case neighborhoods and beat a stranger's head against the sidewalk. I'm biased against Muslim criminals who murder innocent people and blow up school buses, and I even discriminate against liberals who support terrorists and condemn Christians. I don't have a problem with any of those words, because I am doing the right thing and making the right decisions for the right reasons.

We pay a price for being a beacon of freedom. Just think of all of the money we could have saved if we had sat out the Cold War not to mention the European theatre of WWII.

The downside would be we'd be speaking German - those of us who lived...

Mattis took over Central Command, whose area of responsibility includes the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia, from David Petraeus in 2010.

If Mattis had been around in the cold war he would've seen his job as 'protecting the USSR'....
