I KNOW an old woman who hasn’t opened her windows in a decade, afraid that what’s outside will climb inside. Inside, there is the stale odor of dead air.

I know another woman who called me about a corpse lying outside her window for six and a half hours. This was because of cutbacks at the morgue. No dignity in death here. They do it better in Baghdad.

The latest trend? When a person is murdered, he is thrown into an abandoned house, and it is set on fire. There are tens of thousands to choose from.

I know of an 11-year-old boy who was shot, the bullet going clean through his arm. The cops stuffed him in the back of a squad car and rushed him to the hospital. That’s how we do it. There was no ambulance available. About two-thirds of the city’s fleet is broken on an average day.

I know a cop who drives around in a squad car with holes in the floorboards. There is no computer, no air-conditioning, the odometer reading 147,000 miles. His bulletproof vest has expired. His pay has been cut 10 percent.

I knew a firefighter who died in a fire, but not from the fire. He died when the roof of an abandoned house collapsed on him and his brethren could not find him because his homing alarm was broken and did not sound. He suffocated.

If this were New York, these stories would have ricocheted around the world. But this is Detroit and, of course, nobody gives a damn. Even here people have been conditioned to accept these things as normal, a nuisance, the buzz of a fly.

Hardly worth complaining about. He got to the hospital a lot faster and cheaper than he would otherwise.

Should I give a damn? These problems are entirely the making of a corrupt and incompetent Detroit government and leadership. You reap what you sow. Anyone with any sense would have abandoned the city years ago.

If you read the author’s mini-bio at the end, he’s now a TV reporter in Detroit. Before that, he was a reporter for the NY Times..Really???..if Detroit is step UP from the Times....

Is the author thanking the taxpayers in Detroit, who CONISTENTLY voted thugs and thieves into office (while flippin-off anti-union opposition).... or is he thanking the taxpayers in the rest of America who have and will continue to keep the lights on in Detroit?

NY has a $110 billion debt of their own. Chicago’s debt is $97 billion and they just got a credit downgrade so the debt will grow even faster.

The Keynesian thinkers will tell you the debt of those cities don’t matter because they have taxpayers but Detroit once had taxpayers too. The taxes went up to try to keep up with the debt and the taxpayers left.

Detroit is a tiny canary in a really big coal mine. Bailing them out will start a stampede of other cities looking for an easy way out and not bailing them out will make the creditors of other cities nervous.

When they are relegated to trying to relocated to suburban precincts, they won’t find such grand cooperation. They will have to infest the election system all over again.
