n June, the number of background checks conducted by the FBI a strong indicator of new gun sales hit its lowest level since September 2011. The figure was down 54 percent from December 2012, in which more background checks were performed than any previous month in history. But why?
There are probably four reasons : Obama, the seasons, gun control, and physics.
Using data from the FBI, we created a chart showing the number of background checks per month. This isn't tied directly to sales; Kentucky, for example, requires a new check at the renewal of a gun permit. But it's a good indicator.

Physics? Say what?
Some things are best kept under the radar.
Back in 2007 when our Leader sorry Loser ran for office. There was no ammo to be found. I told myself never again. I started reloading. Best move I did. Saved my brass, bought primers, projectiles & powder. Now i load whatever i want. No ammo shortage here. Shoot 4 boxes for the price of 1.
Probably in response to the grand opening of the new Cabelas store a couple miles away. I stopped in there (Cabelas) yesterday evening. They had LOTS of .223/5.56 and most other calibers but the .22LR was picked clean at 6:00 PM.
I just got back from a small local Wal-Mart. They had a DPMS AR in .223 for $607. That seems a reasonable price to me but I am not familiar with that brand.
Just looking at it, it seemed very well finished. It had a collapsible stock and a Picatinney rail. They also had a Mini-14 which surprisingly was priced a little higher than the AR. I will say it was better looking than the ones I owned maybe 25 years ago. The stock actually looked like walnut tho I doubt it really is.
I’m no AR expert, but I believe DPMS is one of the older AR manufacturers. My training replicas (airsoft) are DPMS panthers.
I have a question. If you were involved in the making of a low-budget film... like perhaps “Sharknado” - lol.... would you use airsoft guns and simply not show the end of the barrel on screen (pretty cheap, right?) or use a real gun in front of a blue screen and splice that in with the proper scenery in the background?
I’d use the airsoft because there is an almost 0 chance of an accidental fatality due to dummassity.
Seriously, the left totally missed the boat on airsoft.
The replicas are set up to feel and operate very similarly to the real thing, enough to train young people so that when they are old enough, they can graduate seamlessly to the real thing.
Since they couldn’t afford the fake muzzle flashes, they probably wouldn’t be able to figure out how to put up a blue screen at an actual firing range. It would take all day to get all the right angles.
They probably made that movie in a week. lol.
Based on the chart, it looks like they returned to a somewhat normal pace after sales ran up just after the Sandy Hook shooting when the JBTs in government were threatening to disarm the populace. I’d say that there was some panic buying and some opportunists buying to resell for a profit for a while.
I have only purchased two guns this year. I have enough. Now I need to make more ammo.
Things are starting to return to normal so I’m expecting to see sales also return to normal.
I’m not familiar with DPMS either but here in Maryland, it had been many months since I’d seen any AR-15 for less than $1995. One of my favorite gun shops was simply sold out (granted he runs a small shop) and he only had things on consignment at ridiculous prices (but he doesn’t set the prices on consignment pieces).
Didn't know that. What I do know is finding .223/5.56 down here in Illinois has been next to impossible, and when one could find it, purchases were limited to 50 or 100 rds.
So when wife called and said she found a good sale on the way up to the U.P. (dropping our boys off at grandma and grandpa's for 10 days) I had her pick up as much .223 and 9mm as she could carry.
I'm happily well re-supplied now.
Everyone seems to have missed an important piece of the puzzle. If your state’s CHL laws comply with FBI requirements, a CHL holder can be exempt from the NCIS background check. I haven’t had a background check in years, and I’ve bought many guns. It is estimated that there are now some 6 million concealed carry licensees in the US and the number is rising rapidly. I think the number of background checks as a measure of firearm sales is quickly becoming a useless statistic.
There are no more guns or ammo out there that I need or want. I’m full up until they start selling Phasers and Disrupters.
