NC lawmakers pass sweeping changes to gun laws (liberals start crying)

RALEIGH, N.C. —

North Carolina lawmakers have approved a bill greatly expanding where concealed handguns are legally allowed.

The Republican-backed bill approved by both the House and Senate on Tuesday allows concealed-carry permit holders to take firearms into bars and restaurants and other places where alcohol is served, parades, and funeral processions as long as owners or organizers don't expressly forbid it.

The measure now heads to Republican Gov. Pat McCrory's desk.

The bill will also allow concealed-carry permit holders to store weapons in locked cars on the campus of any public school or university, or a state government parking lot. That measure was approved despite the opposition from the police chiefs at all 16 campus in the University of North Carolina system, who fear increased car break-ins and the potential proliferation of gun violence.

The bill also clarifies state law to say permit holders can carry their firearms on trails, to public recreation areas and playgrounds.

The bill establishes uniform state requirements for reporting information about mental health and substance abuse court findings to the national instant criminal background check system and conform these requirements with federal firearms laws

The compromise bill dropped a provision approved by the Senate that would have repealed a long-standing requirement that those purchasing handguns undergo a background check and receive a permit issued by their local sheriff's office.

That caused the North Carolina Sheriffs Association and Attorney General Roy Cooper to oppose the Senate version. McCrory also said he wanted to leave handgun licensing decisions with sheriffs.

Kuddos to the Tar Heel State! Liberals whine all you want. Hopefully more states will expand CC laws.

Mississippi passed an open carry law that was to go into effect July 1 but an activist judge put an injunction on the implementation of the change in the law allowing open carry saying it was unconstitutional! I hope NC does not have an activist judge planning on doing the same thing!

Didn’t get rid of the stupid $5 handgun tax and second background check, though...

If you have a CCW, no need to buy a permit from the sheriff to purchase a gun...

I sure hope the leftist extremists aren't surprised: after their volcanic eruption of hatred of both the Second Amendment and all of us who believe it means exactly what it says, they should have expected we'd take steps to strengthen our right to keep and bear arms.

Blind hatred never sees very far ahead.

That is great. I would hate to have to memorize a huge arbitrary list of places I can’t go. One of the good things about CO is (outside Denver)we only have to deal with the federal gun free zones.

The way the progressive PTBs went after the CCW holder lists up north, the permit lost a bit of its luster for me.

NC is getting its act together (Good riddance, Bev!), and that's in spite of all the progressives coming here to escape what they did wherever they are moving from.

If we can turn up the volume on our guns, NASCAR, Jesus and whatever else they can't stand, maybe they will just pass us by?

Can I get an amen?

No, but there were some reforms of that process. Sheriffs now have to issue the permit within 14 days. They no longer can arbitrarily deny a permit. If they deny a permit, they have to state a reason. If the permit is denied, I think there is an appeal process.

Now that all the US has CC one way or another, after a short time, gun liberty advocates should start to lobby for states to “go Arizona” with their laws.

That is, *no* permit or license for either concealed or open carry, no other significant restrictions, and permits issued solely and easily for the purpose of reciprocity with other states when Arizonans travel.

This level should be the “baseline” for gun liberty.

And there is a long way to go from there. The SCOTUS has quietly opened the door to challenges to federal dictatorship of “Intra-”state commerce, so states should have control over guns and ammunition solely for use within that state.

Then adjacent states could reach agreements in which they would legally consider “Inter-”state commerce to be “Intra-”state, so not federal business. This would be a heck of a court fight.

States should also encourage the building of gun and rifle ranges in city limits such as in industrial parks, for high schools to have competitive rifle clubs, and to formalize county Sheriffs as the de facto heads of the unorganized militia of all adults of good character in their county.

No need for CCW. I don’t own any guns for self defense. I just shoot guns as a hobby.

It’s not just for a purchase, it’s for basically any transfer of a handgun in NC, including inheriting one.

The compromise bill dropped a provision approved by the Senate that would have repealed a long-standing requirement that those purchasing handguns undergo a background check and receive a permit issued by their local sheriff's office.

So you still need to beg the Sheriff's permission to buy a handgun.

This is why it’s always a good idea to keep a fresh, unopened bottle of Cognac around. Everybody loves it and you never know when you’ll need it.

Be sure and rotate the stock frequently.
