Marco Rubio’s Iowa Slide
National Review Online ^ | July 23,2013 | Robert Costa

Posted on 07/23/2013 8:59:38 AM PDT by Hojczyk

Iowa’s talk-radio hosts have been particularly brutal. Steve Deace, an influential Christian conservative, has warned Rubio not to even show up, and has often taunted him during broadcasts. “Zip, zilch, nada — he’s got no support, he would be dead on arrival,” Deace tells me. “He may end up running for president, but he can’t win here.”

Rubio’s latest Iowa headache is Sam Clovis, a charismatic, suspenders-wearing Republican running for U.S. Senate. On the campaign trail, Clovis frequently uses Rubio as a target. Rather than hit President Obama, the usual rhetorical punching bag, he slams Rubio on immigration to score points with conservatives. He does the same on his website, where he “shames” Rubio in a video.

In an interview, Clovis explains his attacks. “What he did is not sitting well with most of us in flyover country,” he says. “He’s the face of this bill, so I bring him up when I talk about the rule of law, and how these Republicans in Washington want us to violate our principles.”

Conservatives are STUPID and getting MORE STUPID by the minute........we need to go after DEMOCRATS FIRST....FIRST.....FIRST....and then go after squishy Republicans!!!

Liz Cheney SHOULD have stayed in Virginia and gone after a DEMOCRAT SEAT!! HOW STUPID going after Mike Enzi.......WHEN are we going to learn to CIRCLE the WAGONS and not EAT EACH OTHER!!!

We can go after Republicans AFTER we have SO MANY SEATS that losing a few doesn't matter!

I have no problem with republicans being held accountable for their record.

Everything starts there.

Besides, Rubio was too clever by half, thinking he could flummox the yokels with his 'tough new immigration law' BS.

Bye Bye Marco

Yep. He's made himself a New York Times Republican, which is to say: a representative of the Democratic [sic] party in all but name.

I disagree... some of the rinoid liberals are worse than dims... mccain and graham as examples. We will never save America until WE CONSERVATIVES control the agenda... and to control the agenda we must destroy the enemies that we have in the republican party. It must be done and it must start now... no mercy and no quarter for turncoat gop elites... not now and not ever again.

Better get used to it. It's the way things are going to go. I won't vote for an R unless they are a real conservative.

Beware, and be aware, of what happened with McCain. He was Mr. Amnesty, came in 4th in Iowa, but went on to win the nomination because he was who the establishment wanted.

It’s actually a shame, because Senator Rubio talks a good game on other conservative issues. Had he went to the senate and fought tooth and nail against the RINOs and Democrats, he would have proven his conservative roots and earned the trust of his constituents.

By reading his speech transcripts, I knew he was an immigration amnesty fan before he started campaigning for the senate. He was a bit more cautious back then, but he spoke in ways that made his compassion for illegals clear. He went more covert while campaigning—I assume to trick conservatives into supporting him.

That said, had he fought for the other conservative causes and a conservative-controlled senate in the long term, he might have built the political capital to propose some sort of amnesty for the hard cases. There are some of those, like children brought here as infants that are now grown and know nothing about their parent’s country. In other words, I think there’s some room for compassion, but security has to come first and be proven over time.

I think it’s very telling that with Democrats and a bunch of quisling Republicans in the senate, Marco Rubio’s FIRST priority was an immigration amnesty that went well, well beyond the most extreme, hard cases and did not put security first. That only proves my original assessment of Marco Rubio. He’s a shill for illegal aliens.

I could be wrong but I disagree with you intensely.

Why should we elect republicans who vote with democrats.
That only send a message that we will elect them only for the party and not for their stance.

We need to get rid of RINO’s

It would be nice if we could effect that without losing Republican seats , but if we cannot then that is the way the mop flops. Letting RINO’s sit in seats and double cross us isn’t getting us anywhere.

I would just as soon see a Democrat in McCains, Grahams, and Hatch’s seats as to see these double crossing Mother lovers in them. As for Mitch McConnell and Boehner, they are the most piss-poor examples of leaders in the history of the Congress.

Steve Deace, an influential Christian conservative

This makes the rest of this article suspect at best. Steve Deace was an influential Christian conservative but gave up the most powerful (secular) pulpit in Iowa (following Rush Limbaugh on WHO radio in Des Moines) and now almost no one listens to him.

And no one (at least in Central Iowa) knows or pays any attention to Sam Clovis.

Think what you want about Rubio, but don't put much weight on what this says about what is happening in Iowa.

I think it’s possible to go after both squishy Republicans and Democrats, but I agree. The #1 priority should be to politically terminate the Democrats. It wouldn’t do us any good to have 40 staunch conservatives in the senate if we aren’t also the majority. The filibuster, for example, is a bulwark only so long as it serves the left’s purposes. They’ll dump it in an instant—the so-called nuclear option—the instant they can’t get their way on an issue that’s important to them. I can’t really blame them. Nothing in the US Constitution says the senate needs 60 votes for cloture.
