CORPUS CHRISTI - A family-run church known to picket military funerals is threatening to protest a memorial service planned for District Judge Tom Greenwell.
The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas issued the release this afternoon of their plans to be at the United Methodist Church on Shoreline Boulevard Thursday afternoon.
Greenwell committed suicide last Monday inside his office at the Nueces County courthouse. The sheriff's office is still investigating what led to his suicide.
A handwritten will was found that left everything Judge Greenwell owned to a 36-year-old man named Albert Fuentes. Greenwell told KZTV back in 2006 that Fuentes was like a son to him.
The Westboro Baptist Church has gained notoriety for staging protests at the funerals of service men and women killed in the war on terror. The church believes those soldier's deaths are God's punishment for what they call "the sin of homosexuality".
Traditionally, the Patriot Guard Riders of South Texas have come out to show support for the families at funerals where a protest is planned. A member of the organization says they've recieved no request in regards to the memorial service for Judge Greenwell.

Members of the PGR received an email earlier today warning of a credible threat made by a certain hate group who plans to attack PGR members while they stand flag lines at the funerals of Law Enforcement officers recently killed. No name was mentioned by I believe they meant Black Lives Matter. They plan to attack us but we have been told to just leave if they arrive. I hope there are no incidents of violence and if there is they won’t be initiated by the PGR. But I know many members who are very unlikely to be intimidated by these thugs. It could get interesting.
