Huh. Roderick Scott went out of his house to confront a trio of punks breaking into cars in his Greece, New York neighborhood. Scott’s story was that he fired two rounds at one of them when the young man charged him after being told to freeze and wait for the cops. So, we largely have an inverse image of the incident in which Trayvon Martin perished, complete with the kinfolk weeping thusly . . .
“The message is that we can all go out and get guns and feel anybody that we feel is threatening us and lie about the fact,” said Jim Cervini, Christopher’s father. “My son never threatened anybody. He was a gentle child, his nature was gentle, he was a good person and he was never, ever arrested for anything, and has never been in trouble. He was 16 years and four months old, and he was slaughtered.”
Alas, for the future value of the Christopher Cervini trademark and subsequent merchandise sales, young Chris didn’t really look like the son of anyone famous or influential. If they’d had one.
How heavily did stories of gangs of rednecks beating the life out of a black man hang upon the mind of Mr. Scott in the split second before he pulled the trigger? Who cares?
The jury clearly believed that Scott was in fear for his life when he defended himself, and all the second-guessing and carping about him being a wannabe cop went either unmentioned, or unheeded. Absent more information that the state, with all its resources, was not able to cobble together a case to the satisfaction of the jury, I believe that Cervini’s death is one of the possible outcomes of a young man being out screwing around when he shouldn’t have been.
When I was growing up, that’s what I was told. Run with a bad crowd, bad things can happen. Act a certain way, dress a certain way, mouth off to the wrong person, and bad things can and do happen.

Some years back there was a news report of a fifty year old man who was killed in this area by some teenage girls, the motive was thought to be robbery. I believe there were three girls and the one thought to have stabbed the man to death was fifteen. I don’t know any more about it.

A comment from TTAG says the bullet entered under the armpit and exited out the back. This is entirely consistent with shooting from the front, and the attacker turning as they evaluate the threat.
There is action/reaction to consider. Defensive shootings tend to be dynamic situations. It is perfectly plausible for people to be shot in the back legitimately in defensive situation, because they are moving when shot at.

Alcohol can sometimes turn a very mild mannered person to violence. It can also cause some to make threats they cannot carry out. Forty plus years ago I was in a real redneck honkytonk place (yeah, I was young and stupid) when I noticed an auto mechanic I barely knew staggeing around trying to start a fight. He was not what you call big but he was around six feet and 160 and all muscle, not a weakling at all when sober. I tried to calm him down but he was really drunk so I caught his hands and placed both of them together and held both his wrists with one of my hands and led him around until he became so exhausted he finally sat down and behaved himself. The next time I saw him he did not even remember the incident. When I told him what I had done he said, “Damn, I MUST have been drunk for sure.”
That's something I'd read, but since it doesn't matter to me if they're high, drunk, or just stupid...attacking someone because they're trying to stop you from committing an unLAWful act deserves what they get.
So I really didn't think it pertinent to mention.

Yeah, the prosecution in the Zimmerman case "claimed" a lot of stuff like that, too.

Personally I wouldn’t step outside, chase down and challenge 3 thugs unless a life depended on it.

I wonder if his firearm was “licensed”. Don’t all handguns in new york require the govts permission before they can live with a citizen.
This didn’t happen in NYC, which has its own, very stringent, gun laws. The incident occurred in Greece, NY, which is a town in upstate NY, near Rochester. I know a guy with CCW in upstate NY. Outside NYC, it’s up to the local law guys whether to be stingy or generous in giving out CCW licenses.

Makes sense. An attacker, running towards their victim and then noticing a gun pointed at them, might dodge one way or the other at the last second in an effort to avoid a shot...even twisting around. Sort of like throwing up your hands to “block” a round that is being fired at you.

Exactly right. It can easily take a half a second from the time the decision is made to shoot, to the the time the bullet leaves the barrel. A lot of motion can occur in half a second.
Several years ago we had a guy try to climb in my sons window. He changed his drunken mind when he saw the barrel of a .45 pointed at his head.
I did go outside and watch him stagger to his car and drive away. I didn’t chase him down but I did call 911, who didnt seem to care since I hadnt killed him.
The MSM is NOT going to run with this story.
Few people will ever hear of it.
And black poverty pimps won’t change their story (lies) about this type of thing...
And the New York Times won’t consider it news.
I was wondering if the 2nd bullet hit somewhere else...I never saw if the one hit was hit once or twice...there have been incidents where police have to be accountable for the rounds they shot — per the bi-annual range qualification...a legal requirement — just wondering...and yes, I would agree - given the circumstances - a large hostile crowd outside his house would give reason for self-defense and defense of one’s family...he didn’t create the situation - they did...
