Pay companies to hire youth, OECD suggests

The plight of youth unemployment in developed economies is so severe it has prompted the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to call for more government intervention, possibly including paying companies to hire.

It also said on Tuesday that governments should not roll back minimum welfare schemes and should reallocate, where possible, budgets towards programs designed to get people back in work.

Unveiling its 2013 employment outlook, the OECD said joblessness was likely to remain high in its 34 developed member states through most of next year.

But speaking to Reuters after the report’s release, the group’s head of employment policy, Stefano Scarpetta, warned particularly of a growing emergency over youth unemployment. …

They couldn’t pay my company enough to hire the youth they want us to hire. Each one would need an adult minder. Or more.

Why not lower the minimum wage? Or at least the minimum wage for people under a certain age?

Wouldn’t that be more efficient then collecting taxes to overpay people who are worth less than the current minimum?

Gee, why don't they just cut regulations and taxes and thus encourage businesses to hire inexperienced workers?

Socialist morons have made it hard and expensive to hire people. Now they want to subsidize hiring.

Brought to you by the same people who think it’s a fantastic idea to charge companies (via minimum wage increases and Obamacare) to hire young people.

The problem in the United States is the minimum wage. Don’t pay people to hire kids, just reduce or eliminate the minimum wage. (Politically, they can’t because union contract pay is figured in minimum wage multiples.)

The schools produce a product that is unemployable. Kids literally have to be trained to do everything, from how to dress to how to count change. Forget about sitting them down to do bookkeeping or data entry.

You have to train them how to be polite and how to talk to customers. It’s just not worth the effort it takes when there are thousands of qualified older people vying for the same job.

I've been suggesting that for years...but the Unions would never go for it.

#6 is 100% correct.

Someday common sense will return. Probably a decade after the entire system collapses.

Using the Soviet Union as my guide, I estimate that will be sometime in mid-to-late 2082.

What I’ve found is that people over 40 actually show up for work every day. They do it on time. They don’t get an attitude about people telling them what to do. They generally don’t get into petty fights among themselves. They tend to leave their personal lives at home.

We raised our kids that way and it hasn't always been easy for them to find jobs because of their generation's reputation. But once they found them, they've been given regular raises and promotions because they earn it.

When I was a kid (boomer), it was even tough to find a McDonald's type job . . . because there were so many of us. Showing up on time, doing the work and passing a drug test wasn't enough back then.

As a factory foreman I had a definite bias against the young ones but all I could do is give them a chance. Some surprised me and worked out great right off the bat and others showed enough potential to give them a little extra time. The other 95% sucked and usually quit or were cut loose in a few weeks.

How did you come to that estimate?

I'm thinking more like 2022 unless a miraculous renaissance occurs in DC
