In the red corner we have Gawker's Tom Scocca, who argues that regardless of the not-guilty verdict reached by a Florida jury this past weekend, George Zimmerman murdered Trayvon Martin. To believe otherwise, he wrote shortly before the trial ended, more or less makes you a racist:
"This is what the real dispute is: do you believe that a 17-year-old black person counts the same as any other human being? The local cops did not, which is why the case turned into a national scandal to begin with. George Zimmerman did not. Trayvon Martin was walking along, heading home from the store, and that was not enough. Turn the case around: a black teenager goes out carrying a gun, gets in a fight with a Neighborhood Watch volunteer, and shoots him, claiming self-defense. We would not even be discussing the case."
In the blue corner we have Slate's own Will Saletan, who concludes that the problem at the core of the case wasn't race or even guns. "The problem was assumption, misperception, and overreaction," Saletan wrote in a piece that was published last night. "And that cycle hasn’t ended with the verdict. It has escalated." He continued:
"I almost joined the frenzy. Yesterday I was going to write that Zimmerman pursued Martin against police instructions and illustrated the perils of racial profiling. But I hadn’t followed the case in detail. So I sat down and watched the closing arguments: nearly seven hours of video in which the prosecution and defense went point by point through the evidence as it had been hashed out at the trial. Based on what I learned from the videos, I did some further reading. It turned out I had been wrong about many things."(continued)

Apparently the last thing the left wants is for people to understand what really happened that night.
People with nuanced points of view have a hard time winning Tweet wars.
I read Saletan’s piece this morning and to me it felt like the first intelligent thing I’ve seen in the wake of the verdict.
The Scocca guy is so full of hate and venom there’s not point in even attempting to converse with someone like that, left or right.
Tom & Will - may they become increasingly frustrated & confused.
the only people on trayvon martin’s side in this are: blacks who hate whites, self loathing white nifong wannabees,and ignorant morons who have no idea what the facts of the case were.

They don’t want people to understand what happened that night or what is going on every night and day in America and why it has become necessary for Americans to protect and defend our families, homes, property, neighbors and communities. Those in control of our government want civil disobediance and racial strife. Divide and conquer. On our way to the communist utopia.
The only reason you would consider the Zimmerman acquittal to be racist would be because you believe that violent crime is a legitimate career choice for Eric Holder’s people, and armed victims are an OSHA violation.
Facts just don’t fit the liberal narrative.
If race had anything to do with it DOJ would have charged by now.
I can never understand how it is that the further we move away from the history of segregation et al (in years and in deeds) the more the appetite seems to grow among many blacks to seek revenge for it.

At least the Slate writer did something about this. If more people followed such things in detail, rather than be spun into a frenzy over half-truths, misinformation and bald-faced lies, this world would be a saner place.
