An historical document from last night’s “Anderson Cooper.” Skip to 21:00 if you want to hear her describe the initial jury split (three for not guilty, two for manslaughter, one for second-degree murder), but I recommend starting no later than 10:00 in if you’re pressed for time in order to hear her take on Zimmerman himself. The only way the state was going to pinch him on second-degree murder was to convince the jury that he was a racist monster spoiling for a fight — the media version of Zimmerman, in other words. They failed completely. She says she thought his heart was in the right place in conducting neighborhood watch, even if he shouldn’t have gotten out of his car to pursue Martin, and goes on to say at 19:00 that she might be okay even now with him conducting neighborhood watch in her area. Quote: “I think he’s learned a good lesson.” When Cooper presses her by asking if she’s comfortable with him carrying a gun again, not only does she say yes, she adds, “I think he’d be more responsible than anybody else on this planet right now. Zimmerman’s own parents couldn’t endorse his basic character any more robustly than that. Many commentators, including William Saletan in the piece Ed spotlighted this morning, have noted that the jury’s verdict doesn’t necessarily mean that they thought Zimmerman was innocent, only that he wasn’t guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of murder or manslaughter given the particularities of Florida’s self-defense law. After watching this, I don’t know. This juror, at least, seems to have wholly accepted the defense’s version of him as entirely guileless, if a bit overzealous, in wanting to protect his community. It’s a total victory for the defense. But then, as she says, she was disposed to find him not guilty from the get go. The three jurors who disagreed initially might differ.
She was planning to write a book but has now decided against it, partly, it seems, because she underestimated how much attention the trial’s gotten (and how dangerous it is for anyone who contributed to Zimmerman’s acquittal) and partly because the publisher was already getting flack for it from social media. She’s better off lying low.
mflr looks good
So what if Zimmerman got out of his car? Does that mean that any black man in the area has the right to beat him up and he has no recourse?
right...the neighborhood was being hit by vandals and thieves....one can understand why he was patrolling.
it appears that poor baby lil trayvon was one of those dirt bags doing the thievery...he was a drug addict and he used skittles to enhance drugs someway.
“He got out of his car”.
So. He LIVED there.
What is the message here, if you see a “Brother” remain in your car until any looting, robbery or shooting comes to a complete halt?
Zimmerman is partially at fault because he’s not a wussified, metrosexual coward?
The idea that anyone should stay in their car because a suspicious person is in the area is the most nonsense, Euro-wuss idea I’ve ever heard.
‘Cept Martin was a thug.
That was the first illegal, immoral and unjustified act.
And it was the only one.
This juror is a head case!
How can one be overzealous is persuing a security watchman’s job? If he isn’t going to gather all the evidence, why do anything?
Actually martin had tresspassed on private property, so Zimmerman would have been within his assigned responsibility to have made an arrest.
I guess they're suggesting that all blacks are violent criminals, so of course you should stay in your car. I don't know how else one can interpret the "stay in the car" advice. Sounds like more "profiling" to me...
True. Thanks for noting that.
However, this was not the first instance of Trayvon acting out against against an adult citizen. IIRC he had been suspended from school for punching a bus driver. I'll check this out.
More than probable. Plus his choice of physical "sports" = MMA (nice attitude)
Then, after the verdict, she decided (with legal advice?) to enter the lair of the Leftist Lion, CNN, and interview with Anderson Cooper, with the stipulation that there be no lights on her to preserve her anonymity. I don't know if that was extreme courage on her part or a serious risk that shouldn't have been taken. After all, any anonymous CNN studio lackey could have turned on one light and revealed her identity to the world. As it is, she is still trusting her anonymity to the integrity of some CNN personnel, which is really going out on a limb.
Martin might have smoked some mj too, but Zimmerman wouldn't have known that.
Truth, I'm sorry Trayvon is dead. He may have been an aspiring young hood, doper, thief, street punk, but he was also young and might have been turned around if he'd lived longer. People who are thugs at 17 are sometimes penitents --- and new men --- by 30. It happens.
I'm sure Zimmerman didn't want him dead. He just wanted to defend his own life. If he could have stopped Martin with shots to the shoulder and hip, he'd have done it --- because Zimmerman is a decent man.
There are still men and women of honor in our nation. Let's be thankful for that.
Agree. It’s hard to try to speak sanely in a world of whipped up madness.
