If the GOP lets him "defect" to the GOP, it will be more evidence of just how inept they are. They don't need his vote now. And if he is this vulnerable, he most likely will lose in 2014. So he defects and the GOP spends 2014 defending a weak candidate in that district rather than running a strong candidate against him. This would be such a bad idea, such a way to pull defeat from the jaws of victory, that you'd almost think the Dems put him up to it to make the best of a bad situation.
