Reaction following the verdict of George Zimmerman, who was acquitted on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges on Saturday in last years killing of Trayvon Martin, was swift....
But Latino groups have been largely silent on the matter choosing to remain in the sidelines of an issue that has gripped the nation.
The groups were in a tricky spot, some said. Zimmerman, who is Latino and white, killed an unarmed black teenager sparking racial tension throughout the country.
If the Latino groups attacked the verdict, experts said, they would be taking a stand against one of their own. If they defended Zimmerman, whose mother is a Peruvian immigrant, they could alienate black groups angry at what they perceived was injustice against Trayvon Martin. ....
The National Council of La Raza waited two days to send out a press release saying on Monday that it was disappointed and saddened that Zimmerman was found not guilty. NCLR president and CEO Janet Murguía called on the Department of Justice to weigh in more forcefully on the matter and said they wanted to seek justice for Trayvon Martin.
We also believe it is critical to see this case as a teachable moment; we must continue to educate our fellow Americans on what racial profiling really is and the toll it takes on all communities of color in this country, Murguía said. ....
The judicial system failed not only the African American community, but all minority communities across the country, said Arturo Carmona, executive director of Presente.org, a Latino advocacy group based in California. We share the anger and frustration that the African American community has expressed this past weekend. Its important that communities from all backgrounds are vocal and united about this case.

“Shhhhh! Don’t say anything stupid and mess up the Gravy Train!!!” :)
I noticed the Amish just keep on building barns like nothing is going on.
You would think....but no.
More people in this country should remain silent. I’m sick of the post coverage of this trial. Is there anything else happening in America today?
La Raza throws Zimmerman under the bus.
In the words of the fictional Rafe McCawley... "Does my skin look pink to you?"
Latinos are taking one for the team right now, not unlike the National Organization of Women assuming the position for Clinton.
...because the hood rats aren’t mad at Mexicans, they’re mad at Whitey!
Yep!
Zimmerman’s Latino half is from Peru. I know some very nice Peruvians, well educated, cultured, etc.
I’m sorry but you’re kind of missing the boat on this. This is way bigger than one man and one trial.
If you can’t see that then I don’t know what to say.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Why speak up? 99% of the low information protestors are railing against some supposed white supremacy and an allegedly white-tilted legal system. If I was a Latino guy, I probably wouldn't want the angry lynch mob to be reminded that Zimmerman is actually Hispanic and have the angry mob direct their attention my way.
NOW never saw it as taking one for the team though. They didn’t have to think twice about supporting a pro abortion big government liberal like Clinton. To them having someone in power that protects so-called women’s rights is the most important thing.
His brother seemed very sharp when I saw him on CNN.
“Zimmermans Latino half is from Peru. I know some very nice Peruvians, well educated, cultured, etc.”
And more to the point, his family is here LEGALLY. That leaves out the LaRatsa folks joining in to help him.
