'I am a black woman. If you are allergic to black people, don't come in': Yorkshire cafe owner warns potential customers she 'doesn't bite' after previous bad reactions
- Martha-Renee Kolleh put the sign up because of how she had been treated - She said some customers walk out when they see the colour of her skin - Mother-of-two serves British, African and Caribbean food at the cafe
When customers walk into her cafe, only to walk straight back out again, Martha-Renée Kolleh insists it has nothing to do with the prices or the decor.
The problem, she says, is racial prejudice.
In an almost exclusively white town, she believes some people do not like being served by a black woman.
So Miss Kolleh, 46, decided to do something about it, posting a notice outside the cafe which reads: Attention! Everyone be aware I am a black woman and always will be. If you are allergic to black people, dont come in.
But if you prefer quality wholesome meals in a pleasant and clean environment, come in. I dont bite!

She was whining about a non-problem that is all in her head
Yup, I reckon you could say I'm a "creepy-azz cracka" the way I've followed black folk around. Those folks that turn around-n-leave means an open seat fer me. Hehehe. d:^)
^ referring to race baiting liars, not good respectful black people...
Perhaps. But she didn’t stew in it building up a head of self-righteous steam. She faced it head on. That scores some points in my book.
YMMV
I would avoid that place like the plague
You’ve had a Liberian dish? What the heck is “Liberian” cuisine?
I’m glad to hear that.
Beats me. This one dish I had looked a little like fried rice in that it was a bunch of stuff mixed with rice on a plate. Only it wasn't fried. It was slimy, glutinous, oddly spiced, had recognizable bits of snail, thumb sized whole crab, unidentifiable more-or-less meat-like bits, and was not particularity pleasing to my palate.
Well . . . In this case, probably not, but . . .
That is the defining issue.
Made me hungry just reading the article.
Also noticed “Southern American Style Buffet” on her chalkboard.
Gonna go raid the fridge now...midnight snack.
I’ve had occasion to try Ethiopian, Caribbean, and “soul food.” Loved them all!
In relationship to Texas Barbecue joints owned by black owners you are 101% right. They serve up some of the best that you can get and the patrons are black and white. The patrons of those Barbecue joints buy because it is good.
Never had African food, but I love Caribbean food. That was one of the bonuses of moving to South Florida, some kick butt Jerk Chicken and pumpkin rice!
Had a similar experience in DC area. Went into a ‘soul food’ restaurant. Being from Georgia, I told the woman that we didn’t call it ‘soul food’, we called it ‘supper.’ She got tickled over that, LOL.
Remember Britain and England are not the same.
So you’d be boycotting Scottish, N Irish and Welsh food. All of whom make and produce wonderful food. And to be honest, English food (and I say this as a Scot) isn’t as bad as myth makes it out to be.
That sign would make me nervous. She might spit in Whitey’s food, but she don’t bite.
