Let it be noted that on this day, Saturday 13 July 2013, it was still deemed legal in the US to chase and then shoot dead an unarmed young black man on his way home from the store because you didn't like the look of him.

But there is a vital legal issue which this touches on, and which can be rationally and calmly analysed but which of course will never be discussed in the US media, and maybe not even here in the UK, but which to my mind is essential to this case - and that is gun control. I'm not a lawyer, but I believe that it is only the idiotically lax laws on the carrying and use of guns in the US which allow a killer, which Zimmerman undoubtedly is, to walk free.
Here in the UK we cannot (legally) carry guns, so such a case is unimaginable. But we can (and I sometimes do) legally carry a sword - but only under very strict conditions: you don't actually need a license, but the weapon must be kept in a locked case while being transported, you must be travelling directly from your home to your place of practise or demonstration (or back), and you must not have any alcohol or other drugs in you.
If the US had such sensible laws applied to guns (which need no training to use - any fool can kill someone with a gun) - then it would have been beyond a reasonable doubt that Zimmerman was guilty, as, after calling the police and being told not to intervene, he left his vehicle to follow Martin. What exactly happened once they encountered each other (and even the fact that Zimmerman was on medication) is irrelevant. Carrying a weapon, Zimmerman diverted from his path and went towards a possible confrontation, and as a result someone died when he used that weapon. In the UK he would not have escaped the consequences of that decision.

Sure if the US had “common sense” gun laws like Britain poor little Martin would be alive and Zimmerman would be dead and all would be right with the world. /S

Yeah, I’ve heard a few white libs say the N word (or the equivalent) in private. More than one might expect view blacks as a necessary evil, so to speak. Don’t like them, but pander to them to defeat Republicans. Which, besides being racist, is dumb, because Republicans are aces at losing. It’s what they do best. It’s their goal.
Back to England, where Fusilier Lee Rigby was buried a few days ago. Maybe if the English had not imported a Muslim and maybe if Rigby had been carrying, he would not be in the ground now.

I grew up in the 70’s so the culture affected my speech. I usually use that figure of speech when I’m talking tongue-in-cheek about carrying a gun. I often forget about the FR Broomstick(tm).

Man, I read the comments on the article and it’s obvious there’s no point even discussing the matter with many of the writers. They look at the facts and come to a completely different conclusion. They see a man following a boy with a gun and shooting him. They don’t care that TM was beating GZ’s head into the ground. Zimmerman was carrying a gun and shot TM and he is guilty. End of story. There is no way that it can be anything other than Murder. There is absolutely no swaying them from that point of view.
I guess it’s not even worth trying to discuss it with some people.
Of course, the fact that many of them are British doesn’t lend much to their knowledge of the subject of self-defense.

I was out with friends from work last night when the flaming lib checked her phone, found out the verdict and started swearing like a sailor about it. The fun was immediately ruined and the party broke up shortly after since we were all upset and embarassed by her tirade. Does not know one single fact of the case. She knows three things 1. (half) white guy 2. gun 3. black ‘kid’ dead. there is nothing on heaven or earth that would convince her that Zimmerman shouldn’ty have been drawn and quartered immediately without a trial.
Open season? Not on all of them.
