PAMPLONA, Spain The penultimate bull run of Spains San Fermin festival left at least 23 people injured Saturday, when thrill-seekers fleeing the beasts were crushed at the narrow entrance to the bullring, officials said. An American citizen from Ohio was one of two runners gored.
As the huge animals thundered into the entrance of the tunnel, they were blocked by a mound of dozens of people who had fallen and were piled on top of one other.
One bull that had fallen before the entrance got up and charged into the clogged passageway. Two steers jumped over the pile of people as they began to get up and flee.
I felt anguish and helplessness for the people trapped there, not knowing how to get out, said Jesus Lecumberri, 20, a student with several years experience running at Pamplona and other bull-running festivals.
Lecumberri said he had charged in to the entrance alongside the first bull, but saw the pileup and quickly dived into a ground-level hatch built into the passage specifically to provide an escape route from situations like this.

This is a great old tradition and I would hope they continue it forever. The one thing I wish they’d stop doing is reporting that someone got hurt like it was some horrible surprise. OF COURSE someone is gonna get hurt if you have a charging bull amidst so many people.
It is not newsworthy if someone gets gored (alas).
They did not have to attend the event.
Let’s start a journalism school that teaches genuine journalism instead of sensationalism and propaganda.
If some rich person could start a real journalism school, it could help America immensely
A celebration of stupidity.
This is reminiscent of the year when the “runners” formed a human pyramid and blocked the entrance intentionally.
Drunk idiots.
When I was in the Marine Corps stationed at Pendleton . I made the trip to Tijuana and attended the bull fights. I enthusiastically supported the bull from the stands. I was glared at by the Mexicans and did not give a rip. I think bull fighting is the most cowardly human endeavor that exists.
While I am not an expert on bovine anatomy, I do know the differance between a “bull” and a “steer.”
VIVA TORO!
If the political establishment has their way, we may one day see bullfights in the Rose Bowl.
I was rooting for the bulls....ole!
I can imagine the post race conversation amongst the bulls..."How many did you get today?"
They’ll be back next year to do it again.
An apt visual of European wisdom.
No thanks I will stick to surfing with Great Whites.
I attended one in Acapulco once and could only take maybe 5 minutes before I had to walk out......It's hard to describe how I felt, definitely sad but also like something had sucked the humanity out of my body and left me hollow.
For what it's worth, bull killing in Mexico is actually the minor leagues of that event. The real bulls are in Spain, much bigger and bred for it.....the matadors there are more skilled in the killing too.....not that it really matters.
The picture I posted in number 8 is from a paper that prohibits their articles posted here.
About eight years ago an Active Duty Air Force officer (1Lt or Capt?) died running with the bulls while on leave in Spain. Fortunately, the Air Force deviated from their standard operating procedure of pulling in every one to brief them on the dangers of playing stupid games with several tons of potential hamburger.
Stoopid should be painful.
The American was undergoing surgery Saturday afternoon after suffering a rectal perforation, the Navarra government, which organizes the annual festivities, said in a statement."
To be expected. LOL! No sympathy from me. LOL!
