Finally we got to remember the man and not the act as the horror of Woolwich was temporarily put to one side.
At last, among family, friends, comrades and his extended Greater Manchester clan, the celebration of a special character who put a smile on everyones face took centre stage.
The presence of Prime Minister David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson may have reminded mourners of the city in which Fusilier Lee Rigby was horrifically slain and the global impact images of his death had.
But this funeral was about saying thank you for the life of a loyal comrade and a loving family man.
No image defined it more than his two-year-old son Jack, blinking as he slowly mounted the steps of Bury Parish Church in the searing midday sun, clutching the regimental teddy his father had bought him, in a T-shirt that said simply: My Daddy My Hero.

A man reported to be a serving soldier is dead and two people have been shot in Woolwich, south east London, after what Sky sources understand is being treated as a terrorist attack. Downing Street has called a meeting of the Governments Cobra emergency committee after the incident in John Wilson Street, which David Cameron described as truly shocking. Sky sources understand that senior police officers believe the killing was likely to be a politically-motivated Islamist terrorist attack. Dozens of weapons - including a number of knives - and pools of blood could be seen on the ground, where a man wearing a Help for Heroes T-shirt is said to have been attacked by two men.

There are a lot of pix at the link -- scroll down. Here's an interesting one: apparently, they have their own equivalent of Patriot Guard Riders:
The faces of the pall bearers are so telling.
Very sad. The animals that took this husband and father away should be killed. I hope they put them in general population.
The flowers are beautiful, and in the DailyMail pictures, you can read some of the notes on the bouquets.
In other notes, I see that the family and media circled around the wife with the child and not the fiancée with the Cracker-Jack-prize engagement ring.
Thank you Albion Wilde for posting this link.
I hope Prime Minister David Cameron does the right thing - and kicks Islam out! It seems the people in attendance will not favor anything less...
Confusion to see the Arabs in their man dresses - but using cell phones...what a backward and awkward bunch...
Never trust a man in a dress, I say. That would be judges, clergy, trannies and camel jockeys.
