Sorry, I misplaced my scorecard. Now, al Qaeda, what side are they on? They're Sunni so presumably they fight against the regime; that right?

If so....get out the popcorn. I may actually start to pay attention.

I could be wrong, but this sounds like a civil war within a civil war. It sounds like a 3-way dust up.

This isn’t the first report of the rebels fighting among themselves, I read another article a few weeks ago where radical elements attacked the so-called moderates, in fact, the radicals were Al Qaeda, the story was a bit like this one.

What this means is Al Quida thinks they can take
Assad now, without the help of the others, who
would be in contention with them once Assad falls.
Just clearing the dead wood so to speak.

The rebel and al-Qaeda were both on the same side, but have turned against each other. So the new front opened in Syria is the rebel against al-Qaeda, not against Assad.

And thus everyone who said that the rebels were all Islamic extremists is proven false.

Well, it seems like the more powerful/effective/significant rebels are the Islamic extremists.
Soon after the thing broke out into open warfare, after the first waves of army defections, the sort-of-secular bunch seem to have become rather irrelevant.

Some of them are Islamic extremists, and the others are dead.
