The U.S. military blew through $34 million on a hulking headquarters in southwestern Afghanistan that probably will never be used by U.S. forces, in an example of government waste that has military commanders fuming.
John F. Sopko, special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction, exposed the problems in a letter this week to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and other military leaders. The Washington Post first reported on the controversy, writing that the construction of the building continued for years despite warnings from the Marine commander in Helmand that it was not needed.
The military is now investigating what went wrong, and is trying to figure out what to do with the 64,000-square-foot facility in Camp Leatherneck.
"The building will probably be demolished," Sopko said in his letter, citing the opinion of military officials his office spoke with. Another option is to give it to the Afghans, but doing so would require another major overhaul.

Your tax dollars at work.
Meanwhile, isn't it a relief to know that we're saving $3.8 million a year by telling all of America's 315 million ciitzens, including all of those six-graders on trips to our nation's capital, that they are no longer allowed to see the White House, the house of the People of the United States?
It’s shovel ready stimulus.
Sounds like bulldozer-ready stimulus to me.
Which is an absolute waste.
You can hire people to build things that people will actually use. Doing that creates wealth.
Or, you can hire people to literally waste our resources.
Like 0bama...
Gosh. Don’t remind me.
Here’s what we need to do in Afghanistan. First, blow up some Taliban base so we can go out on a bang. Then just withdraw from our country. We don’t have to remove every file folder, just the men, the weapons and the vehicles. The tropos can carry the weapons and ride in the vehicles. If our allies want out, we’ll take them out too. Then fly the troops directly to the Mexican border and set up camp. While we’re at it, let’s quit meddling in the Middle East.
Oops, I meant “their country” not “our country”.
Since the Fraud-in-Chief thinks so highly of them, why not use the building to open a Walmart staffed by Marines??
I'm pretty fed up with the way that the government wastes taxpayer dollars, this crap needs to end!!
I'm sure the Taliban could use this facility as their headquarters once BO pulls the troops. Maybe convert it into a giant mosque.
Waaaay to go, fed.gov!!! Keep up the great stewardship of the taxpayers money!
Boy, that sounds like China, eh?

The answer is obvious.
Paintball.
“You can hire people to build things that people will actually use. Doing that creates wealth.”
No, it doesn’t. It might recover a bit of what was spent, but in general, taxing people’s wealth and income, and spending it to subsidize other people is just stealing and receiving stolen goods, and harms anything that is left of a healthy economy.
A few weeks ago, there were threads about the military dumping $millions (or maybe it was $billions) of equipment in Iraq.
Yet, a couple of weeks ago, military bases were whining because they didn’t have money for fireworks — because of sequestration.
Leave it. It will be a great place to restart Al Qaeda University next year. Or it would make a world class Falafel House restaurant.
I recall posting in the 2003 or 2004 regarding war profiteering and I got skewered by many of the loyalist bushbots.
[Notice how the bushbots maintain a low profile any more?]
Early into the Iraq War 2, I recall CNN headlining a report that that war would end up costing over $1 Trillion by the time we ever pulled out.
[I used to work for defense/government related contract businesses. They referred to themselves as a ‘feast or famine’ career. When certain administrations were in power, contractors were rolling in money and projects. When other administrations were in power, contractors cuts staff to bare minimums.]
I believe we should have given the equipment to India.
