DC Democrats Pass $12.50 Minimum Wage Law… Wal-Mart Cancels Three Store Openings

“For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Isaac Newton’s Law of Motion

Washington DC Democrats passed a bill that would require retailers to pay workers at least $12.50 per hour.

Within hours of the decision Wal-Mart announced it was canceling three store openings in the area. Nice work, Democrats. WTOP reported:

The D.C. Council has passed a bill that would require large retailers like Wal-Mart to pay workers at least $12.50.

The bill now goes to Mayor Vincent Gray for his consideration. The 8-5 vote was short of the votes needed to override a veto from the mayor.

In a statement, Wal-Mart says the Council has forced the retailer’s hands and it will abandon three planned projects in the District.

“We will not pursue Skyland, Capitol Gateway, and New York Avenue and will start to review the financial and legal implications on the three stores already under construction. This was a difficult decision for us – and unfortunate news for most D.C. residents – but the Council has forced our hand,” the written statement says.

given that 50 feet outside the district is an antirely different STATE (either MD or VA), I find that highly unlikely...

yes but it is the freak state and they would probably give the land to dc.

when do they start calling walmart racist for not subjecting their stores to the urban thuggery so often seen in these areas?

or did Wal-mart jobs start coming in terms of indentured servitude?...

Yes. With the over-abundance of cheap foreign labor, it's a race to the bottom for lower income-level US citizens. Besides which US taxpayers are footing the government benefits both to those who aren't working and those who don't make enought from places like Wal-Mart to pay their own food and medical expenses.

Particularly stupid because with the extreme cost of living in D.C., market forces probably would have eventually forced Walmart to pay something close to $12.50 to get competent help anyway.

Unless welfare was eliminated, then the feral 'Gibsmedats' would have to get jobs.

If you think the wages at WalMart aren't good, don't work there.

Even if that weren't the issue, I wouldn't work there anymore than I'd shop there.

I'll put the question another way. If they think their wages are good enough, why don't the only hire US citizens? (both directly and indirectly through subcontractors)

Corporations like WalMart are the reason so many supposed Republicans traitor us on immigration. They and their donors are more interested in cheap labor than they are in sending invaders home.

Cities have no business attempting to fix the price of labor. We have a labor market for a reason. The city is way out of line here.

I’m not talking about “redistribution of wealth”. WalMart undermines US workers (1) by being awful about selling made in the USA merchandise and (2) paying wages that cannot sustain economic survival in the US, without the serious drop in wages and standard of living most US citizens have experienced for over a decade now.

If a couple works at $8.25/hour that is $16.50/hour...

And if they both only work 30 hours a week (so the company avoids paying benefits) that's just a bit over $25.000 a year, but no benefits. So they get food stamps and subsidized health insurance. Wouldn't it be better if there were a return to individual ownership of businesses, where people selling merchandise were self-sufficient?

Go ahead, raise the minimum wage to $12.50 an hour. What next?

Prices increase to compensate for the increased wages. We’re on the path to prosperity now! Thank you sir may I have another? $6.00 for a loaf of bread, $7.50 for a gallon of milk.

Can you point to any major retailer that stocks 90% domestic to 10% imported items like you expect Walmart to do? Maybe the blame lies with American consumers that have no loyalty to American manufacturers? I know that option is taken out of our hands once the manufacturer leaves, but people would need to be controlled with government force (tariffs, duties on imports, fines for smuggling cheaper goods) to make them pay a premium for domestically produced goods so domestic factories can stay in business.

What happens to our existing exports when we shut our markets or place high tariffs on imports? Do you think the other countries will smile and thank us?

Another fly in the ointment is 3-d printing. Once 1 worker is needed when 100 workers were needed before to make things, we are in a whole lot of trouble.

Walmart Announces $50 Billion Buy American Campaign

Want to see a Renaissance of made in America? Cut our government to 1/4th it’s present size, throw out our entire tax and regulatory system, no more taxes on corporations, enact a single flat consumption tax to pay for every government service.

Once you stop punishing investors for success with ever increasing taxes, you will have more investors willing to invest. Ten of trillions of dollars are outside the US due to our tax laws. Create a fertile ground in the USA where investments can grow, the US will have more jobs than we know what to do with.

Fewer people make more money each. Umm... how exactly does this mesh with their income redistribution beliefs? I’m confused.

We don't save the US unless economic balance comes back.

There is no meaningful separation between the government of the US and the corporate oligarchies and they are both managed by the banking cartel. Your task is to pay for the voters that keep it that way and the gambling habits of psychopaths like Corzine, Dimon and Blankfein etc. So much for "free enterprise".

I will be sure to visit my local Walmart again today.
I like a company that can tell the government - - any government and its scumbag politicians - - to go play in the street.

sure

I wasnt aware there was any prohibition against starting your business

If individuals can afford rent taxes insurance govt permits employee wages/benefits and pay for inventory they can sell for enough money to cover all the above and make themselves a “living wage” for their time and effort, then go for it

Show those Waltons a true successful business model

Or maybe in DC instead of working for WalMart $8.25 slave wages they can just go work at a Mom and Pop busines for $12.50 an hour plus bennies and make a good living and get a flex partime schedule to take care of the kids before and after school and take college classes, to boot

oh....wait

It's not as easy to start or grow a business as it was before regulation got crazy. Just look at the numbers of small cap companies that didn't make it or stagnated during the recession.

As far as local businesses go, when Walmart (and the others) come to town, they overwhelm the competition by undercutting their prices and selling better merchandise than they will once the competition is destroyed.

“People who work have to be able to survive on that”

You just outed yourself as a socialist.

You really don’t belong here.

Did I "out myself as a socialist" or did you out yourself as a cheap labor puppet master?

I'm hardly a socialist. I don't believe the government should provide ANY food or medical assistance. I believe that people if they're qualified and good workers should be able to make a living wage.

By supporting wages that people can't make a living on, you're actually supporting socialism. Those people depend on the government for things their paychecks don't cover.

in terms of minimum wage and “living wage”- How many Micky D burgers are you going to purchase at $20 per if the employees paid $12.50+ per hour - to start?

Clearly this is BS, have you done the math? Doubling the wages of McD workers does not equate to doubling of the cost of the hamburgers.

Let me help you with the math.

As of July 2010, the National Restaurant Association reported that labor expenses represented about 1/3 of the total sales of most U.S. restaurants.

Lets say a hamburger today costs 2 bucks. The employees make minimum wage, around 7 bucks/hour. Now lets double their wages to $14.00/hour. What does that do to the cost of a hamburger that used to cost 2 bucks?

Well let's see. 1/3 of a $2.00 hamburger is $0.67. we double labor so now the labor is $1.34 per burger, so the retail price goes form $2.00 to $2.67 NOT $20 per burger. Get it? Your kind of logic makes Freepers look a little misguided at times...

What people get paid for ANY job is rightfully between THEM and their EMPLOYER. If either party is unhappy with the arrangement then they are free to end it.

Here is a clue: not every job is worth a “living wage”.

Things used to be different. An ilustrative example of what happens when mandated wages are arbitrarily set by government:

Not too many years ago “bag boys” were common at the grocery stores around here. Nobody made more than minimum (something less than 3 bucks at the time) but any high school kid that wanted a job could find one.

Then the unions and the minimum “living wage” jackasses came along. They seemed to think these jobs should pay enough to feed a family. So they kept pushing for higher minimum wage rates. Their friends the Democrats kept obliging by raising the minimum amount an employer must pay for any job regardless of the value provided. As a result many jobs became more expensive than they were worth.

Well, guess what No more bag boy’s jobs. No more LOTS of menial jobs that were not WORTH the kind of money to raise a family. So now we have extremely high unemployment numbers amongst the young.

This is just ONE little tiny example of why what you espouse is STUPID and DESTRUCTIVE.

You are either a leftist or a fool. Which is it?
