Now that Rick Perry has taken himself out of the 2014 gubernatorial race, Texas on the Potomac is looking at the two early contenders for the Republican nomination for governor, Attorney General Greg Abbott and former Texas GOP chairman Tom Pauken. This profile of Pauken was written by Ross Ramsey of the Texas Tribune
Tom Pauken has chosen a hard road.
Hes a Republican running for governor in a race that could feature either the longest-serving governor in state history, one of the best-financed potential replacements in history, or both.
He says that Gov. Rick Perry and Greg Abbott, the states attorney general, are exemplars of a leadership style thats more about the politicians than the policies, and he wants to change all of that.
First, he will have to get peoples attention.
Pauken, who got his political start in the Reagan administration, is a former Army intelligence officer and Vietnam veteran, and a former chairman of the Republican Party of Texas. He ran for Congress and lost twice to Jim Mattox. Years later, he ran for attorney general and finished third in a race eventually won by John Cornyn, now a U.S. senator.
Perry appointed him to a spot on the Texas Workforce Commission, and Pauken used that, in part, as a forum for his argument that the states public schools arent getting youths ready for careers.

His resume looks good but I don’t trust the Texas Tribune.
That sentence makes absolutely no sense.
I didn’t write that sentence. Just copied-and-pasted it from the article.
Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t support him just because there’s an article in the Texas Tribune.
I will vote for Abbott..Gotta love the guy’s tweets:
Full booth at gun show joining my fight to protect #gun rights. #txgop #nra #tcot http://t.co/PBW8jrzphb
Why should Texans vote for a conspiracy theorist as governor?
I was initially skeptical about this statement:
as a forum for his argument that the states public schools arent getting youths ready for careers. (i don’t think public schools should be directing students. they should teach fundamentals RRR and these can be basically taught in several years.) Students should be allowed to exit the system(uugh) when they are prepared to divert their training to other areas. i hated school.
but after reading the article i was impressed by his policy on education. I.e.
He has been a loud critic of one-size-fits-all testing in public schools, arguing that the state shouldnt try to send every high scholer to college, but instead should give some of them the technical or vocational training they need to go to work after high school. wish i lived in texas we should have these type of discussion here in bankrupt philly
I’ll be voting for Abbott.
Actually that is a pretty good description of him. His record as state GOP chairman was stellar. I think of him as the anti-Rove.
Explain to us ignorants please.
What about conspiracy theorist and Abbott?
You could donate to his campaign. If he is elected governor and pushes his education reforms plan it could inspire other states to follow up on these measures.
A Major Watershed issue is the active deportation of the ‘Ted Kennedy Wetbacks,’ and other alien illegal invaders in TEXAS.
The Perry-Bush Amnesty Wing of the RINO Party had their chance, now let’s see what the new crop of politicians stand on punishment for illegal alien invaders.
BTW Tom Pauken, don’t fall for the sucker bait of illegal alien invaders will someday ever vote for you. They are from Socialist Countries, and will vote Socialist here.
I did a Google Search. Didn’t see any mention of him supporting the Rubio/Graham Amnesty Bill.
Thanks. We need to let the newbies know in TEXAS that the RINO Party is D-E-D: dead, everlastingly, dead.
No he isn't. In my opinion of knowing about him for many years, he is a disaster and a destroyer - that is my opinion. Couldn't believe he's running for governor. I'll take Attorney General Greg Abbott in a wheelchair any day. It's Abbott who had Cruz working with him in his Attorney General’s office.
“he is a disaster and a destroyer.”
Didn’t Karl Rove say the same thing about Tom Pauken? However, should we say the same about Karl Rove and his GOP sabotage schemes? Is Karl Rove endorsing Abbott?
He nearly killed the party. We fought to get him out.
Could you elaborate a bit on why you believe Pauken is a disaster ? Just curious about your take.
My post may not be clear. It is Pauken who is the disaster.
Abbott and Cruz are superior. Cruz worked for Abbott.
