North Carolina farmer courts controversy with parade float that reads 'White history month'

A tractor pulling a cart full of watermelons bearing a racially charged sign stirred controversy at a small town Fourth of July parade last week.

‘White history month,’ was emblazoned on the side of farmer Donnie Spell’s float in a Hope Mills, North Carolina parade Thursday. The sign also read ‘HUG WTE PPL.’

And as is chugged along the parade route waving a Confederate Flag, many residents took offense to the racial implications.

Hope Mills Director of Parks and Recreation Kenny Bullock oversaw the parade entries. He told WNCN there was no mention of the signs on Spell’s float application.

According to Bullock, Spell only listed that he’d be parading with 8-10 antique tractors, one with a trailer of watermelons for sale.

I vote for October. It’s an excellent month. Cooler temperatures, high school, college and pro football in season, the leaves turning to a rainbow of colors, warm apple cider and bit of crispness in the air. And at the end we can all repent and dress up in minstrel black face for Halloween.

Free Speech?

Free Expression?

Nah - that’s just code word for “racism”.

Now shut your racist face and go pay your taxes. Your hard working government is broke. :)

I’m eating watermelon right now, so why is it racist to depict a black person eating watermelon?

An uncle of mine works for the Dept. of Agriculture, and many years ago he was inspecting planes for illegal biological materials of all kinds on arriving international flights. One of his co-workers was black. After one flight from somewhere in Africa was cleared, they were discussing how dirty and smelly the people were, and how awful food that they brought with them was. The black guy looked around, and then whispered to my uncle, “I’ll deny ever saying this, but after looking at these people, I thank God that my ancestors were brought here, even in chains...at least I grew up with some cleanliness and eating normal food.”

Personally, I find the idea of special carve-outs for any and every minority to be offensive. We’re all people, and in this country we’re all supposed to be Americans. Melting pot, remember that? This guy was merely being in-your-face about how annoyed he is about one particular carve-out. I congratulate him for his guts, though he could’ve and should’ve left out the watermelons.
