Bruce Riedel looks like he is more closely associated with the Democrats than the Republicans. Is that correct? Should his views be suspect to us?

As for the Saudis, there is the official position that Riedel cites, supporting the interests of the monarchy, and there is the unofficial position of royal family members who support the MB and AQ, which Reiedel fails to mention. The two positions are strange bedfellows in supporting the Sunni uprising in Syria. The Saudi group just prevailed over the Qataris in gaining control over the revolt, but which side (of that side) won: Bandar or AQ? Riedel doesn’t appear to care. It’s all an anti-democratic monarchist cabal in his view.

So I suspect that Riedel may be developing a meme that the Egyptian revolution 2.0 is an anti-democratic Saudi plot, which is face-saving for the Obama administration.

While most of the world is ambivalent

Stopped reading right there.

The "world" that's ambivalent about this consists of hardline Mohammedans and their liberal fellow travelers.
