Currently just Tweets and locals talking about this, nothing on news sites yet. Lots of stuff in the Twitter feed, including links to uploaded videos of the smoking mess.
That crash has special meaning for me because my father was on the scene, he worked at the airport at the time, and because the doomed plane passed right over my head seconds before crashing. We lived in East Boston at the time and our house was right under the flight path.
Looks like you may be right. Almost landed short in the water.
Interesting. Maybe that's what's accounting for the described wing drop. A stall.
Gear collapsed and also the lower half of the plane seems compressed.
FAA now reporting to Fox that the plane was supposed to land on a different runway but landed on this one for some reason.
probably backwash,, the tail is on the end of the runway,, actually, he had a good line, just was a little too steep at the end.. maybe shifting winds.. they called the
Amercia’s cup off yesterday due to high winds..
those asian carp are nothing to sneeze at.. invasive little ba’stards
The rear pressure bulkhead was blown out rearward, causing the tail to blow off, IMHO!!! Something odd occurred inside the passenger fuselage.
Plane broke apart right behind the area the cabin crew. Unless they fell out the hole they should be in the plane.
Fox reports everyone got off the plane.
Your husband looks to be right, so far. From ABC News helicopter view video of the runway it looks like the plane skimmed the embankment on landing. The rocks look like they were disturbed and the debris field starts there along with a long scrape trail and pieces of landing gear.
IF true, he’s a damn lucky pilot.. they wouldn’t need the buses.
Lots of yellow and greens with 1 red but lots more of yellows and greens in second wave.
Man, that plane came to a quick stop. Looked like it went from impact to full stop in about 400 yards.
what a crappy way to end a 12 hour plane ride
Oh, but no way will they even say the word, terrorism...
they still have to clear customs.....
A couple of dozen people walking the runway probably looking for the black box, at the threshold area of the runway where touchdown occurred. Lots of small debris along the runway. The Black Box was not in the fire, so it should provide useful data.
The way the entire top of the fuselage is gone, and the area blackened suggest the possibility that the fire was concentrated in the area of the wing. The Smoke seen in the initial images show that the fire was at or near the starboard engine, perhaps rupturing a fuel tank on a hard landing impact when the landing gear collapsed.
It is interesting, that the tail section broke right at the aft end of the pressurized cabin cone.
After 30-yrs in aviation, no one “knows” immediately (if ever) the cause. However, informed observation would indicate no internal explosion, just post mishap fire. Additionally, the empennage is at the approach end of the runway indicating possible short/very hard landing that might have caused the tail section to separate—not blown off.
Boeing and all their second and third tier suppliers, along with the engine manufacturers, will be all over this.
Not to mention it’s going to be a while before they can claim their baggage.
Quantas - - If I remember correctly, they have NEVER had an accident.
