It seems entirely revealing, if dispiriting, that the days before the July Fourth holiday showed Red America and Blue America pulling apart at an accelerating rate. Of all of our national holidays, Independence Day is the one most intimately rooted in our common history and shared experience. Yet this year it arrives against a background of polarization, separation, and confrontation in the states and Washington alike. With municipal politics as the occasional exception, the pattern of solidifying agreement within the parties—and widening disagreement between them—is dominating our decisions at every level.

I feel like it's hopeless.

Boston was tragic obviously but once again it prompts local police agencies to ratchet up the paranoia and stupidity as a legion of Barney Fifes go looking for nonexistent bombs and bombers at parades in small towns with their expensive (and otherwise mostly idle PR plaything) K-9 units.
This is the problem with having a national media in a huge nation geographically and population-wise. Lefty coastal cities set the agenda for everyone else.
Even the densest citizen knows by now the type of person responsible for modern terrorism. If Joe Sixpack can point out the potential threats why can’t the so-called experts? Despite this obvious, reliable profile the police still follow the PC dictates of urban effetes. Screening for Muslims would be quick, targeted, cost-effective, and leave the rest of us out of officials’ little East Germany revival. In a town with no Muslims virtually no action would be required beyond the usual parade route duties. The TSA are to be mocked, not emulated.

We are blue, true blue and loyal to the Constitution. They are red, Communists to the core. This language switcheroo must stop and Conservatives must reject the label “red”. Brownstein is right about America though. We conservatives love and support America. They, the Marxists/progressives, are trying to destroy it and transform it into something else. So, far we are losing badly.
Brownstein is right in that we are divided. However, he is wrong about every reason he lists for this division. He is a communist hack/fellow-traveler, so, of course, anything he will say will be propaganda for the enemy.
The liberals, led by Barack Obama, have gone so far to the left I don’t even consider them Americans at heart any longer.
They don’t believe in the constitution and have no use for most of it.
They hate traditional America and our culture and seem to be embarrassed that they are Americans.
Almost all of their energies are directed toward Obama style “Change” which is really the mindless destruction of our constitution, heritage and traditions.
They want America to become some sort of a borderless, national socialist commune, open to the world, populated by people who never want to grow up and dedicated to free-sex and free stuff.
But somehow they are content to be governed by tyrannical racists and muslim terrorists - as long as they aren’t white Christians.

Well said. He deliberately obfuscates and overlooks the real divisions and reasons for them, which aren’t about parties.
