The liberal side of the Texas abortion showdown has the two most powerful Democrats in Washington squarely in its corner: Barack Obama and Harry Reid not to mention a Dixie Chick.
On the right: Rick Perrys holding down the fort without much obvious help from national Republicans.
The RNC hasnt latched onto the fight. Few national Republicans have weighed in. And a key party official in Texas acknowledged theres no behind-the-scenes help coming, though he says he doesnt need it.
Republicans will talk about the abortion bill when theyre asked about it, but they arent swooping into the fight with the same enthusiasm as liberals.
The mismatch makes sense: Even abortion bills that poll well, like the one in Texas does, open the door to the kinds of comments that have hurt national Republicans repeatedly from Rep. Trent Frankss comments last month on the very low number of rape-related pregnancies to Todd Akin blowing his shot at a Senate seat over his legitimate rape remarks in 2012. But that political calculus doesnt do much for anti-abortion activists who are glad to see their issue front and center.
You either fight and ask your leaders to fight on an issue that cuts your way or you just fold up and go home, which is what the national party wants to do, said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List. It really is fear. It really is simply, Were not going to go there.
Now, youve got an issue thats in your platform, that cuts your way with big margins. To be silent is a mistake, Dannenfelser said.
In contrast, Democrats couldnt be happier with the way the issue is energizing their supporters.

Texas should pull out of the GOP and start their own party.
That is not surprising. The GOP stays out all fights, including the fight for freedom.
We’re pretty much used to fighting on our own here in Michigan.
Sometimes I think we’re better off without them.
The GOOBers are still waiting to pick their fights. They haven’t seen any that they like yet. LOL!
This is a state issue; no need for the national party to get involved.
Seriously, if you want a third party, this is the only viable way it will ever happen, if a major state defects there delegation from the National GOP, other states will follow suit and join them.
The term, “stupid party,” is well earned.
The GOP-Washington elites are taking the party down to oblivion, which is where they want it to go, I think. Then they switch to being Dems while telling us “the Republican Party has moved tooo far to the right,” when there is not even a hint of evidence for that.
The GOPe would like to see conservatives aborted.
“Gutless Party” is a more accurate description.
The big money GOP donors are almost all for gay marriage, abortion, and open borders and that is who the GOP looks to for guidance.
a lot of these state abortion restrictions, like targeted abortion regulations that only apply to abortion clinics, will be struck down by the supreme court eventually, probably soon, anyway.
Weak cowards. Just call it what it is: murder. No need for flowery words or shoving your feet in your mouths. Yes is yes and no means no.
Of course. Rick Perry is a MAN...national Republicans are spinelss eunuchs.
My thought exactly.
What makes you think this? I don't understand why any "big money" donors would give money to a party whose platform is in opposition to their preferences.
After having a 2012 candidate who openly opposed the party platform on abortion, I think people need to find out what the national republican party position on abortion really is.
