Canada closes embassy in Egypt

Canada has closed its embassy in Egypt "for security reasons," the department of foreign affairs announced Tuesday morning.

In a tweet, the department said the embassy would be closed until further notice.

Canadians in Egypt are encouraged to register with the department online.

On Sunday, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said he was "deeply concerned" about reports of violence and deaths in Egypt.

"Dangerous divisions within Egypt threaten its stability and damage its long-term economic prospects," Baird said in a statement. "We urge the government of Egypt to foster more meaningful political participation by the opposition to focus on rebuilding the Egyptian economy."

On Sunday, protesters took to the streets in Cairo to demand an end to the regime of President Mohamed Mursi. The armed forces chief of staff set a 48-hour ultimatum for a power-sharing deal but Mursi announced early Tuesday morning that he would pursue his own plan for national reconciliation.

Smart move Canada. The UK did the same thing 24 hours before our ambassador was killed in Libya.

Canada seems to be very competent in the years of late.

When Canada closed its embassy in Iran last year, the usual suspects were quick to criticize the “Harper government”. Then Benghazi happened, and those shrieking voices suddenly faded away.

Probably a good idea.I wonder what the Brits,Aussies, etc are doing.Of course *we’re* supporting the Dark Side (Darker?) so we must stand our ground against “hooligans”.

Lots of countries cut ties with Lybia.
The US was the only one to stay.

Wonder what the US ambassador to Egypt is thinking right now.

Mursi announced early Tuesday morning that he would pursue his own plan for national reconciliation

Yea, Morsi's plan is simple...it's called SHARIA LAW.

But apparently the people of Egypt are not buying it. 14 million out of 84 million marched in the streets demanding Morsi resign on Sunday.

And apparently the Egyptian Military (which has been trained by US advisors, either in Egypt or in the US) is not buying it either. The military issued a 48 hour ultimatum to Morsi to either find common ground with the opposition, or be deposed.

And the military has announced its governance plan should it intervene. Guess what...that plan sounds very familiar. Oh! I know, it is almost exactly the way Hosni Mubarak governed the country. You know, the guy who kept the peace for over 20 years. Who was our ally. Who strongly went after extremist Islamics like the Muslim Brotherhood, who helped the US in the war on terror, and who ensured that peaceful Christian worshippers were protected (who are now being actually crucified in the open and their churches burned).

But Obama changed all of that when he helped the opposition over throw our ally, Mubarak. He did so in a fashion that was very reminiscent of what Carter did in Iran...which led to the Ayotollahs and the fundamental Islamic state that has been in place since.

Obama has dealt treacherously with our allies, with US interests in the region, and with the US Constitution.

I wish to God the American people had the gumption to stand against Obama as the people of Egyptians stood against Morsi last Sunday. 14 mnillion out of 84 million Egyptians would mean something over 50 million Americans marching for Obama's resignation.

WHO REALLY IS BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA?

Wonder what the US ambassador to Egypt is thinking right now.

He/she is probably figuring "at least there's no Presidential campaign underway".

Our leaders seem to lack the sense to do what is right.
