The National Institutes of Health is spending $253,800 of federal taxpayer money to study ways to educate Boston’s male prostitutes on safe-sex practices.

According to a description of the federally funded project, a previous study of male sex workers in Boston found that “almost one third (31%) were HIV-infected, and most (84%) had a steady male or female partner, thus the risk for HIV-infection/transmission is not only to/from their sex work clients but also to/from their primary partners.

Education is not what is needed. What percentage of male prostitutes do not already know how HIV is prevented and how to reduce the probability of transmitting HIV? I'd guess zero. The problem is motivation - they don't care. Or worse - they find the risk itself exciting. Give up on them and save someone who cares.

I’ve got a suggestion that would be economical. Make a list of the 10 things it is most important they don’t stick in their butts. They could make a picture version for male prostitutes who can’t read. As I understand it this should solve most of their problems while relieving the taxpayers’ responsibility to serve their fellow citizens who happen to be sex workers.

Exactly. HIV was identified more than 30 years ago in populations of gay men. They didn’t know what hit them and it was very sad at the time. I lived in San Francisco then, had a few gay friends, and saw the horror they were going thru. Devastating.

But now, spreading HIV is inexcusable, at least for adults. Male prostitutes absolutely do know how to prevent it. Safe-sex practices are not exactly difficult to understand. IF they don’t understand “don’t put that in there without this on it,” they are not smart enough to cross the street without a nanny.

But certainly, not the nanny state.

Please understand that you are paying for the worldwide promotion of homosexuality, which is apparently the only purpose of the Africa junket now underway. Once it has been promoted, then you’ll have to pay for grants like this for male prostitutes overseas also. Your tax dollars at work.

Why are you so upset about a measly $254K? The President of the United States is spending $100,000,000.00 of our money to tour Africa PROMOTING homosexuality!

$100,000,000.00!!!
