In fact as I recall the term was “mackerel snappers” used mostly as a light-hearted tease of Catholics from non-Catholics usually Episcopalians which we Catholics did and still do refer to as “Catholic-Lite”.

It was indeed “mackerel snappers.” Robert Mitchum said it to Deborah Kerr in the now classic movie, “Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison”. It was the mid-fifties and I was a young girl of 6 or 7 in Catholic school at the time. I remember laughing with my mom and dad at the drive-in movie theater when we heard it. It never bothered us to be set apart from the general population. Enduring disparaging remarks only made us feel special.
