Former Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado, a likely 2014 gubernatorial candidate, said he supported the Supreme Courts ruling that cleared the way for gay marriage in California, and said that same-sex couples should be afforded the same rights and protections as heterosexual couples.

The Gop in California is dead.
THis is your next Gop Gubinor candidate.
Anything for votes.
Ugh. So far, how many Repubicans have jumped on this bandwagon? This idiot, Portman, MurCOWski. Who else?
Only there's just the tiny problem that in a state, with every bit of the Democrat machine working overtime to get out the vote, and the GOP working overtime to ensure that as much of the conservative vote stays home, still over 50% of the voters decided to enshrine into the state constitution the dictionary definition of marriage, since it seemed like politicians were unable to understand that the people had little interest in seeing it changed.
So, on purpose, he chooses to discard half of the available votes out there to try to split the remaining 48%, more than 80% of which will never ever vote for anyone who has an (R) after their name.
The logic is astounding. It is like he is thinking that his Spanish last name will somehow give him an edge in the fight for the Governor's chair, as there certainly isn't anything else for him to hang his hat on. He now supports discriminating against religions based upon social policy, raising taxes, expanding government, unionization, state health care... The only thing missing is the flip over to the Democrats...
Having said all of that, since the state now only permits the two highest vote getters in the primaries to stand for the general, any actual conservative running against him would have a massive hill to climb. Not only do they have to defeat Maldinado, but they also have to do it with enough votes to defeat the second place Democrat.
Failing to field candidates in general elections will end most fundraising opportunities for the state party. The state Republican party does not want the race for governor to ever be two Ds, so will absolutely work to undercut anyone who attempts to actually unseat their chosen horses. Primaries in California are no longer a vote of confidence on party policies or directions, but instead are a live or die race to actually find a seat on the general ballot.
Unfortunately, political correctness is so strong, that we are reaching a point, at least in liberal states, in which political candidates have to be in favor of homosexual marriage. It takes the issue off the table in campaigns.
And, realistically, there’s nothing a GOP candidate for office in California can do about this issue now. We can debate how stupid this Supreme Court ruling is on the issue, but, realistically, homosexual marriage has returned to California.
As far as I am concerned, the GOP is dead, period.
CSI: Stinkymento confirms death was self-induced.
Maybe it’s time to form a new conservative political party, and abandon the GOP.
While we have historically had two major political parties, they haven’t always been today’s Democrat and Republican parties.
The Whig Party dissolved in the 1850s, and the Republican Party arose at that time.
Any new party will take some time to build into a national organization. Realistically, abandoning the GOP and starting a new conservative party will mean the Democrats will win the 2016 presidential election, due to splitting the vote between a new conservative party and the remnants of the GOP. But the GOP is getting away from supporting conservative values and issues in too many cases.
Any serious effort for a new conservative party would have to look beyond the next election cycle or two, and concentrate on building for the future beyond that.
According to polls, far more people identify as conservative than liberal. Maybe this is the time, historically speaking, with the GOP abandoning conservatives, for conservatives to abandon the GOP and let them be Democrat-lite. See how many elections they win without conservative support.
That’s what I told the opinion poll caller an hour ago.
I didn’t even allow her to complete her sentence because I knew what it was all about — a request for MONEY.
When will Freepers stop arguing over its corpse?
They are in support of using government to punish amy individuals, businesses, civic organizations, members of the US military, churches, and municipalities that tell openly homosexual folks to go somewhere else if they want to flaunt their homosexuality, to keep their private sex lives/perversions to themselves or go somewhere else to live it out in public.
These "supporters of gay marriage" ONLY support PUNISHING those of us moral Americans who tell openly homosexual folks, "Go exhibit your gayness somewhere else -- keep it out my kid's school, my son's boot camp, my daughter's PE class."
THAT is what he supports -- PUNISHING Americans who want their moral right to refuse to participate in the "homosexuality is okay" charade.
If he gets the GOP nomination, I'll have to vote third party or go fishing on Election Day.
That sounds good, but unfortunately it wouldn’t work. The GOPe would co-opt the new party just as they control the GOP now. Why would they be able to do so? Money. You can’t win elections without money.
Does voting even matter when illegals are the majority in CA?

Assemblyman Tim Donnelly is also running for Governor in 2014. A champion against amnesty and opposes SSM.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
You dang eXtremists. ;-}
Screw this RINO. Tim Donnelly for CA Governor in ‘14 !
Squirming Worm, why would anyone in CA support this “GOP” candidate..and can Northern/East California split off to form its own state like North/East Colorado wants to??
“THis is your next Gop Gubinor candidate.”
Yeah, tell me again l how California is so eager to vote for a Defense of Marriage Amendment.
Politicians like this one don’t take principled stands on their own - they follow where the people are already going.
