(Live Thread) Egypt: American Killed During Violent Clashes (Egypt about to blow up)

Egyptian security and medical officials say an American has been killed in the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria during clashes between supporters and opponents of Egypt's embattled President Mohammed Morsi.

Alexandria security chief Gen. Amin Ezz Eddin told Al-Jazeera TV that an American was killed Friday in Sidi Gabr Square while photographing the battles between opposition youth and members of the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails.

A medical official told The Associated Press the American was wounded by gunshots and died at the hospital.

Six Egyptians have been killed in days of clashes ahead of nationwide protests Sunday demanding Morsi's removal.

The State Department said Friday that Americans should defer nonessential travel to Egypt, citing the uncertain security situation. It also said it would allow nonessential staff and the families of personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo to leave Egypt until conditions improve.

Of all the shots I’ve been viewing this one tells the story best as these were people on their way....

Reminded me of what might have looked similar to when Israel crossed the Red sea...only this is Egypt and today.

Really quite the contrast when you consider.

one person was shot in the neck and killed and many injured.

So stunning isn’t it...and more Historical than most realize....over 5 million...out the size of the population in Libya for perspective.

But the worlds nations have risen with Egypt...I don’t think anyone expected this....and it’s been more than interesting following it on twitter....

I'd like to know what he was doing pointing anything at active combatants. That's just asking for it. Whether they mistake a camera for a weapon, or whether they correctly identify it as a camera but decide you are or might be working for the enemy, they still smoke you.

The rebel side really does not want pics taken that could identify them. The government side really does not want pics taken that would make the govt look bad. It's a tossup as to which side the guy who shot him was at.
