The massive disposal effort, which U.S. military officials call unprecedented, has unfolded largely out of sight amid an ongoing debate inside the Pentagon about what to do with the heaps of equipment that wont be returning home. Military planners have determined that more than $7 billion worth of equipment about 20 percent of what the U.S. military has in Afghanistan will not be shipped back, because it is no longer needed or would be too costly to send home.
That has left the Pentagon in a quandary about what to do with the items. Bequeathing a large share to the Afghan government would be challenging because of complicated rules governing equipment donations to other countries, and there is concern that Afghanistans fledgling forces would be unable to maintain it. Some gear may be sold or donated to allied nations, but few of them are likely to be able to retrieve it from the war zone

Just an FYI, we had a prototype of a (sorta secret) thing over there, and when it was time to come back it took 5 or 6 guys three weeks to decontaminate it of the native crud.
It’s pretty labor intensive, but we don’t want Islamic kudzu or something coming back.

Nothing new here. We abandoned a huge amount of equipment overseas after World War 2.
Why don’t they melt the equipment down and use the metal to erect giant Christian crosses, Stars of David, and Buddha statues as a memorial to the Americans who died there? A giant statue of Porky the Pig would also be a nice gesture.

The Israelis never throw anything away. I think they probably still have David’s sling in an armory somewhere. Can you put snow plows on those trucks in Afghanistan? There are uses.

I think losing was important to Obama, the arming of his Muslim brothers was just a free perk.
Hey! That’s OUR stuff! We, the American taxpayers, bought it and paid for it. It should be brought back and given/sold to American citizens.
But this kind of waste is nothing new. After WWII, tons and billions of dollars worth of stuff were abandoned, or worse, dumped into the sea, in all theaters.
