A unique security system designed to keep students and faculty safer in school has been outfitted in one Stonington school and on Wednesday Eyewitness News got a firsthand look at it.
Pawcatuck's West Vine Street School is the first school in the district to be fully integrated with the panic button security system. Soon they will be installed in the high school and other schools.
Each classroom, along with the gym and library, has a red secure panic button. As soon as the alarm is triggered, simultaneously the police department, fire department and other agencies are notified.
It's all designed to save response time.
"This eliminates the need to call the office and then the office to call 911 and explain the problem and take away valuable minutes for a response," said Capt. Jerry Desmond of the Stonington Police Department.
As soon as a teacher or adult hits the panic button, a sequence of events begins.
The magnetic exterior doors automatically close and lock, while the police department is notified and can hear the activation alarm in each police cruiser.
The dispatch center can also see what is taking place from cameras mounted in the school hallways. The fire department and public works department hear the audible alarm through their portable radios at the same time.

Another security feature set to be added is curtains for all the windows. The system also incorporated a live active scanning system for guest's driver's license in order to verify that they are not a threat.

Great job on locking the doors from the outside, so when the cops arrive (several minutes later) they have to force they way in the building to wait for someone inside to unlock it. Shooting fish in a barrel comes to mind.
I’d bet that more than one school senior is now trying to figure out how to get their thumb on that button without anyone seeing them.
Is this saying that once a “bad guy” is inside and they hit the panic button, that the bad guy can’t get out of the building?

Great. Just great. Hasn’t anyone noticed that these creeps usually end up offing themselves after their slaughter-fests? So what if they hit their panic button? The doors lock and all the targets are locked-down for easier killing. On top of that, the response teams won’t enter until they’re absolutely sure all was okey-dokey to make their entrance.
Get yer kids out of these statist prison camps; homeschool and teach them something real - on top of possible saving their lives.
The creep can just go to the office where they presumably have a button to unlock the doors, kill them first and be uninterrupted by cops now trying to figure out who has keys/access/tools to let them in.
so they lock a murderer inside and they are then unable to get out if they could. zero-tolerance security.

After all, by the time the inept cops get there it will be at least 10 minutes and all of the killing will already have happened.

Columbine had a single armed doughnut muncher, overwhelmed and outgunned by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, he ran away *to call for backup* once he realized he was up against armed opponents.
The real answer lies in utilizing a force that has no problem in dealing with multiple hostiles, and whose personnel would be much closer in age to the kids in the priso educational institutions themselves, and not viewed as the enemy.
This came up in the 1920s, when a series of brutal armed robberies of Post Offices was accompanied with the murders of the postap personnel witnesses. President Coolidge sent in the Marines to gard the mail, the facilities and the employees, and that was the end of that.

We don’t have enough Marines to guard half the schools. Total personnel in all the Services is less than 1% of the population and 90% of those are not in combat skill areas.

Just so. But the Marines in combat roles- and every Marine is still trained as a rifleman first, are taught to think of the four-Marine fire team as the basis for tactical operations and movement. And a single Marine working at each school, augmented with a fellow Marine reservist and a couple of veteran Former Marines, would likely be available in most communities. I would expect that would be a much higher level of real security than a $60,000-$8o,000 per year off duty cop, (the going rate in my county 3-school district) still alone and unavailable during dental/medical appointments, court appearances, vacation time, etc.
Our local sheriff's answer? Hire a ex-felon convicted narcotics smuggler as a deputy and assign him to one of the local high schools. Personally, I'd rather have the real deal if my kid or grandkids was going to that school.
