Bingo.
Most (not all - witness my very poor abnormal German Shepherd of all things) dogs will AT LEAST sound the alarm. (In fact, many crooks don’t like that - will leave rather than draw attention.) Get in the way of the scum, and buy a little time, if nothing else.
You’ll get alot of bravado on here and “I carry all the time; so should you” big-talk nonsense, but even so it’s just not practical. You have to have a good reason for carrying 100%.
OTOH, surely there was SOME weapon this woman could’ve found, especially when the bastard went back up 3x! Surely she had a knife or some large long thing to whack him with.
It isn’t just firearms, people. In my home are many possibilities not far away.

I do, but I live in FL. I see you live in MD.
What does the "bravado," and "big talk," comment mean?

In this case, I think it was fortunate she didn’t go for a knife. She was stunned and staggering and he was so much bigger than her; he probably would have taken it from her and used it on her and the children. She made a judgement call under terrible circumstances not to fight, not to scream, and she was right. She and her children lived.
That’s 20-20 hindsight though. God help her and her little girl heal from this.
I don’t sit around all day ‘packing’ but the dogs are with me 24/7, no exceptions.
Nothing escapes their notice.
Number one on the list of things criminals hate is a barking dog.
They want to break in well under 30 seconds and they don’t want to be seen or heard doing so.
A good dog ruins that.
I’ve just upped on my odds, is all.
Lights, cameras, signs, dogs, guns.
We’ve had people comment that this place is not so much a home as a fortress.
Good.
