A teenage friend of Trayvon Martin was forced to admit today in the George Zimmerman murder trial that she did not write a letter that was sent to Martin's mother describing what she allegedly heard on a phone call with Martin moments before he was shot.
In a painfully embarassing moment, Rachel Jeantel was asked to read the letter out loud in court.
"Are you able to read that at all?" defense attorney Don West asked.
Jeantel, head bowed, eyes averted whispered into the court microphone, "Some but not all. I don't read cursive."
It sent a hush through the packed courtroom.
Jeantel, 19, was unable to read any of the letter save for her name...
During nearly two hours of cross examination Wednesday in which he tried to raise questions about her version of events and accused her of telling several lies under oath, including about her whereabouts during Martin's wake.
"Under oath, you created a lie and said you went to the hospital?" asked West.
"Yes," responded Jeantel. She said she lied because she didn't want to see the body.
Jeantel became increasingly agitated and scoffed when West told her that she would have to continue testifying.
She is seen as a critical witness to the prosecution because she is the only person able to say that Martin claimed that he noticed a strange man following him and that he was scared. Jeantel said Martin described the stranger as a "creepy ass cracker."
Jeantel said Martin, 17, was walking home during halftime of the NBA All-Star Game when he became unnerved because he was being followed.

Many hard working people around the world are illiterate. My grandfather signed with an X and did quite well for himself in the 20th century.
So I don’t care that she is illiterate. I do care that she is willing to lie under oath. I do care that she likely lied further on the witness stand.
I think the letter was written by someone in crump’s office. They are the ones who started this whole dee dee thing and lied about her age.
Nah. That's just the normal result of being "educated" in government schools.
Exactly. And what also amazes me is that if she can’t read cursive, then she probably can’t write it either. What kind of education goes on these days? I don’t think I’m all that old and I remember doing cursive in 3rd grade over and over again until the teacher was satisfied. My cursive today isn’t pretty but it’s passable, for a lefty. My mother, however, has beautiful cursive.
He Democrats. This is a result of all that money you claim to spend on schooling.
Do you still consider it illegal for your slaves to read or something?
Never heard of it. How many viewers does it have? 3 dozen?
I’m watching a feed from Channel 9 (Miami? Orlando?) and during the break that just started their legal analyst says that it’s obvious that someone talked to that witness after yesterday’s session despite the fact that she stated, under oath, that that’s not the case. Also, the analyst says that she, that witness, has hired a big time criminal defense lawyer. Why,In God’s name, does *she* need a criminal defense lawyer????? What’s going on here???
Never heard of it. How many viewers does it have compared to a real news channel like Fox News?
I used to have that problem then I took a “Read what you wrote” class
Well... for the prosecutor and his perjured 'star juror' maybe...
But not for me, and I suspect I'm not alone on this one. It was some of the best TV I've seen in years. I think she's going to have to testify again today, I can't wait.
I'm hoping Zimmerman's lawyer will paint her into a corner and she will go "full ghetto" on him while the cameras are running.
I guess that means she can only read printing. It sounds like not only can she not read cursive, she probably can’t write it either. Probably can only print instead of write.
When questioned repeatedly as to why she hadn’t mentioned some exculpatory information before, she repeatedly said, “Nobody axed me.” After about ten such questions, I fully expected the state’s attorney to say, “Objection! Axed and answered!”
>> what the heck is cursive?? ,,
.
You can’t use that kinda language on FR!
Who wrote the letter then, Dan Rather?
Because she's taken money from somewhere or someone to play her role in this farce.
She's perjured herself on multiple occasions for money.
Reminds me of the movie A Few Good Men when the not so bright Marine was caught in a dead lie. He was coached by Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore). The classic line when Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Cruise) in a drunken rage says to Galloway, “You must have been absent the day they taught the truth in law school”.
But she both reads and writes cursed...
“that this 19 year old cant read.
I don’t think she has an IQ of 80”
Safe assumption, as 40% of blacks have IQ test scores of 80 or below.
PS That result has held steady for nearly 100 years, ever since IQ testing started.
