As dissatisfaction with the U.S. public school system grows, apparently so has the appeal of homeschooling. Educational researchers, in fact, are expecting a surge in the number of students educated at home by their parents over the next ten years, as more parents reject public schools.
A recent report in Education News states that, since 1999, the number of children who are homeschooled has increased by 75%. Though homeschooled children represent only 4% of all school-age children nationwide, the number of children whose parents choose to educate them at home rather than a traditional academic setting is growing seven times faster than the number of children enrolling in grades K-12 every year.
As homeschooling has become increasingly popular, common myths that have long been associated with the practice of homeschooling have been debunked.
Any concerns about the quality of education children receive by their parents can be put to rest by the consistently high placement of homeschooled students on standardized assessment exams. Data demonstrates that those who are independently educated generally score between the 65th and 89th percentile on these measures, while those in traditional academic settings average at around the 50th percentile. In addition, achievement gaps between sexes, income levels, or ethnicityall of which have plagued public schools around the countrydo not exist in homeschooling environments.
According to the report:
Recent studies laud homeschoolers academic success, noting their significantly higher ACT-Composite scores as high schoolers and higher grade point averages as college students. Yet surprisingly, the average expenditure for the education of a homeschooled child, per year, is $500 to $600, compared to an average expenditure of $10,000 per child, per year, for public school students.

That says it all.
There’s a teenage girl from New Jersey who may turn out to be the next big name on the country music scene. I didn’t think anything of the story I saw on the local news site today until it was mentioned that she was home-schooled.
“That says it all.”
It’s missing “no homo themed, anti American, liberal lessons” taught by leftwing, union teachers.
Charter schools, religious schools and home schooling is cutting into them so much that they are actually running commercials on TV here to get you to send your children to public school. They are saying that they have a lock on music, art, sports and a rich educational environment, but people are still using alternative methods for education. This is in Texas. I wonder if other places are encountering the same thing.
I can see a day in the not too distant future where, although no outright law has been passed, armed guards will accompany a CPS stooge to forcibly pull children from a home to put them in a public school. It’s for the greater good, of course.
But...but...where will kids learn about gay sex and condoms?
I not so sure.
Homeschooling gives the state the tax dollars without having to provide the education.
That’s pretty irresistable to a bureaucrat.
After today’s SCOTUS ruling, there will be 70 times more homeschoolers.
Pooblik Skrewl Collective edumacators - drawing inflated salaries while proving why collectivism always fails.
THat’s interesting. Because whenever these ‘teachers’ whine and demand a pay raise, the systems always cut music and art.
My kids are in band. Both first chair. They learned more from me and being around music than they have ever gotten from their teachers.
Just wait - soon home schooling will be declared illegal. Threat to national security, don’tcha know.
That says it all.
Yep, Bingo!
An online based Preparatory School opened a few years ago near my neighborhood. Their enrollment has continued to grow, even with new public schools opening, close by. What does that tell you?
The single biggest ingredient in a child's success at learning is a home life that involves parents or guardians who actually give a sh!t about the kids in their care. Everything else is almost inconsequential.
Parochial schoolteacher here. Your comment made me smile. :)
Hey parents, we have a great deal, fabulous teachers and best of all, no gay crap.
Let me know if you’re interested in having your child receive an excellent eduction for a decent price.
I can see a day in the not too distant future where armed guards accompanying a CPS stooge who intended to forcibly pull children from a home to put them in a public school were shot and killed.
Its for the greater good, of course.
The illiteracy created among minority students (60%) is inhumane and racist.
