Marriage is what marriage is. Our laws can either conform to that reality, or we can legislate, and adjudicate, and execute, our own destruction.

But by giving gays marriage benefits, doesn't this then force them to accept that gay marriage is equal to the acceptable definition of marriage...so it changes the definition of marriage' by default?

Absolutely. Marriage is what it is, and while the state can recognize it, the state can’t redefine it.
