Just how much of a hole did Paula Deen dig for herself?
With the Food Network's announcement that it would not be renewing its contract with the Paula's Home Cooking star, along with QVC distancing itself from the celebrity chef and Smithfield Foods cutting ties with her altogether after she admitted to past use of the N-word and other hurtful remarks, it would seem that Deen's culinary empire is currently up in flames.
But her bank account isn't under as much fire as one might think. Sure, her ranking as Forbes' No. 4 highest-earning celeb chef is definitely at risk...but all is not lost just yet.
"I would estimate the loss of Food Network and Smithfield to be pretty huge," Forbes staff writer Caleb Melby, who estimates that Deen has taken a post-scandal hit of $3 million to $4.5 million, tells E! News

Even MORE towards my point!
Hi, Mamzelle! I really like your post. You hit the nail on the head. Paula, despite all her lib creds, couldn’t win out against the food Nazis and haters.
I was a fan of hers when she had her first show. It was in a small, yellow kitchen (very pretty) and there was a dog wondering around the set. She made delicious food and was quiet and demure. I still think she’s the best cake maker on the food network.
When she became a “star,” she started getting strident and annoying. But the gal can cook!
She denies that, you know. She wanted a Southern-themed wedding for her stupid brother. She had been to a restaurant that had elegant black waiters in white coats and black pants. That’s what she wanted; not black men playing slaves.
Off topic, about 15 years ago, I had dinner at a restaurant called Safari in Montgomery, Alabama. It was a steakhouse and politicians dined there. We were seated under a large photo of George Wallace! All the waiters were black and very, very elegant.
I'm unhappy defending an ignorant Democrat. But--what's being used on Deen will certainly come get us all.
Btw--did you know that discrimination in hiring is allowed in show business? That's why the waitresses at hooters are a particular physical type. They are not waitresses but models, legally speaking. Movie producers when casting a movie discriminate on the basis of race all the time.
I suggest the reruns of Laura Calder’s show on the cooking channel. I record them and watch them carefully. I’ve picked up a lot of techniques from her style. Just this week I made fritters from squash blossoms from one if her episodes. She has an attitude toward cooking and food very much like my own. I really liked Paulas show in the early years but she took on an unpleasant vulgarity as time went on.
What kind of cuisine does Laura do? I’m not familiar with her...yet.
And, I agree: Paula let too much of her vulgar side out.
I've been a fan of HGTV and the cooking channels, but lately they've been disappointing. All the contests and "Survivor" reality stuff. I like Ina Garten and sometimes can even take Giada, though I roll my eyes at the BOTT (boobs on the table) with her. Oh, she's so beautiful. She has twice as many teeth and four times the boobs...
I know the chef you’re talking about! She’s from Canada, I believe. Yeah, the boobs get tiring. I do like Ina. She prepares good food using good ingredients - some of which are out of my price range.
Actually, after talking about boobs, I’m embarrassed to admit my favorite is the beautiful Nigella Lawson. I have all her cookbooks and even a bio on her!
Neah.
She should have said “Yeah. So what?”
Don’t lie. Don’t apologize. Don’t take any crap.
If she did that, she might have lost here show on Food Network, but she’d still have lots of sympathizers. Cringing and apologizing cost her both her show AND a lot of sympathy.
I watched the puke coming out of the NBC morning show this morning. Paula knelt and bowed to the gods of tv and for her troubles they spit on her saying her apology wasn’t sincere.
I wish they’d get someone truly excellent on these channels, like Anne Willan. She runs a school. Why not have a show?
