Regular NVA divisions backed by tanks, artillery and MiG's overran Saigon, not Vietcong insurgents, who were wiped out during the Tet Offensive back in 1968. Yes, you're right. And I know that many RVN units performed admirably during those terrible final days. But IMHO, the analogy still holds. Afghanistan will end up exactly like Vietnam did.
Well, not exactly. After taking South Vietnam, the North did not then use it as a base to attack the US. After taking Afghanistan, radical islam WILL use it as a base to attack the US (again).

It is more complicated than that. Besides the Taliban there are the 7 controlling families/tribes that are also vying for power. It still operates as a Feudal system over here.
Could get ugly real fast.

Afghanistan will end up exactly like Vietnam did.I'm actually cautiously optimistic. Because of Kashmir and Central Asia, both the Indians and the Russians have a reason to keep the Afghan government standing. It all comes down to funding. The Soviets sent billions in brand-new equipment on credit* to the North Vietnamese just prior to the end in 1975. Russia alone has a bigger economy than the Soviet Union, thanks to free market reform and skyrocketing commodity prices. Bottom line is that Russia + India > any combination of private Gulf state donors.
* The mammoth scale of this loan was such that it never paid back in full and was written off against rent payments for Soviet bases in Communist Vietnam.

They should send Kerry out to talk to the insurgent attackers. Its probably just a misunderstanding on their part. Hell sit down with them and straighten things out. I hear he served in Viet Nam...

Your proffer, is not close, to the same circumstance. The ‘68 TET is so far away in reasoning- that perhaps you have only read some bs ridden crap, and are misled. Take another swing, at the ball. At least get a grounder, for one on base.
To: dfwgator
They probably could have discovered the plot, but remember the Clinton years and this all makes sense: Democrats turn the intelligence and security apparatus inward against Americans and ignore the fact that the world is a dangerous place. It’s what got us 9/11/01.
