From the time Abraham Lincoln entered the White House nearly a century and a half ago, there has been an anti-Lincoln tradition in American life. President John Tyler’s son, writing in 1932, seemed to speak for a silent minority: “I think he was a bad man,” wrote Lyon Gardiner Tyler, “a man who forced the country into an unnecessary war and conducted it with great inhumanity.”
Throughout his presidency Lincoln was surrounded by rivals, even among his own cabinet. Outside the White House, his many enemies included conservative Whigs, Democrats, northern copperheads and New England abolitionists. Wisconsin editor, Marcus M. Pomeroy, sniped that Lincoln was a
“worse tyrant and more inhuman butcher than has existed since the days of Nero.”
Shortly before his reelection Pomeroy added: “The man who votes for Lincoln now is a traitor and murderer.… And if he is elected to misgovern for another four years, we trust some bold hand will pierce his heart with dagger point for the public good.”

I will give you credit for providing evidence that there is more than one lost cause loser on the board, so arguments made to one, don’t necessarily get read by the other.
The troops that were "deserting" weren't straggling in line of battle. It is hard to straggle when you are in a trench earth work. Secondly those "deserters" were from South and North Carolina running home to stop Sherman's torches.
I confess that as a former soldier, I judge the desperate by what they do when desparate.
Example, Joachim Peipfier of 1st SS had some 88 US soldiers murdered at Malmedy. I give him no points for being desparate. His unit also killed about 325 Belgian civilians in that attack too.
Of course he was following orders, like you say no Southern soldier would do for Lee.
States' Rights was abused THEN as now; Instead of being considered equal countrymen, the South was pushed around while its economy was undermined by the same Bluebloods, Industrialists, and Intl. Financiers who've now helped crater this entire nation.

No, I wouldn’t compare anyone in the Confederacy to Hitler or a Nazi. I wouldn’t even compare Lincoln to Hitler. But you on the other hand worry me.
We could agree on some matters. Perhaps we could agree that the US Department of Education should be shut down, since the Framers were familiar with the concept, and did not give the US government powers in that regard. Perhaps we could agree that the US dept of Agriculture should be abolished on the same grounds. Perhaps we could agree that Taxes are excessive and provide perverse incentives, and that Income Taxes, Social security taxes, Medicare taxes and Obamacare, as taxes would be better shut down, or even just tapered off to nothing, even if there is no current constitutional justification to end those taxes: They may be opposed as bad policy.
If you could find yourself willing to agree with those positions, we could walk a long road together, agreeing all the way.

Perhaps his point is, the actions of a man are not so different when he is desperate. Hitler was a murderous bastard in 1934 when he had Ernst Rohm murdered, as well as before the last days, just as he was during the last days. As Nostradamus suggested of “Hister” “bloody his rise and fall shall be”.
Lee was known as a brutal slave master before the civil war. He selected his corps commanders based on their discipline, which in some cases meant willingness to impose very harsh treatment of his men, all for the cause of human slavery.
Slavery must be brutal because some do not wish to be slaves. When anyone accepts slavery they must accept the brutality.
To be fair to Lee, he was able to learn and adapt to circumstances. He was never accused of brutality absent the Confederate Army and absent Slavery. When he led the Marines at Chapultepec, he didn’t have a company of sharp shooters behind his assaulting element.

The southern deserters would have been better off stopping Hood’s and Wheeler’s torches. Hood burned more of Atlanta than Sherman, if only because he got first chance to burn the city.
Southern deserters burned many homes and farms that Sherman never reached. Pretended confederate defenders slashed the fire hoses in Richmond and other southern cities to prevent fires they set from being extinguished. That way the US Army forces would be busy putting out the fire, and the pretended confederates would free to get away.

One may also humbly note that after the War of the Great Rebellion, the federal government overreach was reduced, in part because the people of the US wanted it so.
One can again humbly suggest that some of the fed gov overreach was due to WWII, Cold War, and War on Terror, and that federal government overreach can be reduced when the people of the US want it so.
Check the history, check the mirror. The truth hurts.
