Given the friction and financial woes facing the Girl Scouts these days, perhaps it's time for a giant friendship circle. Under that long-standing tradition, a ring of Scouts clasp hands and give a little squeeze, accompanied by a silent wish of good will.
Just a year after its centennial celebrations, the Girl Scouts of the USA finds itself in a different sort of squeeze. Its interconnected problems include declining membership and revenues, a dearth of volunteers, rifts between leadership and grassroots members, a pension plan with a $347 million deficit, and an uproar over efforts by many local councils to sell venerable summer camps.
The tangle of difficulties has prompted one congressman to request an inquiry by the House Ways and Means Committee into the pension liabilities and the sale of camps.
"I am worried that America's Girl Scouts are now selling cookies to fund pension plans instead of camping," wrote Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, in a letter last month to the committee chairman.
Compounding the problems are tensions at GSUSA headquarters in New York, where several senior executives have quit or been ousted since Anna Maria Chavez took over as CEO in 2011. Last week, some of the roughly 325 employees there were invited to take early retirement, and Chavez said an unspecified number of layoffs were expected in August to offset the revenue losses.

Stop your preaching! It has happened on our watch!
I'm sorry to admit I did nothing to stop it.
What did you do, if anything, but find fault and point the fickle finger of blame!
According to what I read, this is an internet myth. Check out
With all the people whho ran around FR before and after spouting the virtues of “Well Romney is a lesser evil”, quite a few opened themselves to the concept that evil at any level is acceptable. Sp I’d think if they willingly accept evil in their presidential candidate and it is a virtue, this should be no issue for them at all.
Yea, people scream when confronted with reality. Deal with it.
According to what I have seen, sites like this and Snopes are often politically biased. In this case, the only proof is a disavowal from GSUSA. Why would I believe them?
While I don’t true the GSA one bit, I won’t believe this supposed excerpt from a brochure until someone scans and posts a copy (or a link) to said brochure. Two minutes of internet research revealed it to be a hoax.
Well we can wallow in cynicism and blame.
Or we can be constructive and remind people, now that mortal man has disappointed them, of where hope always was found. It’s not like asking Santa Claus for a puppy though. It requires a heart and soul investment in the Lord of Hosts.
All you do is scream. That is reality!
Well for fairness sake one ought to note that the GSA officially disavowed them. One hopes that however libertine they have gotten, they are not yet at the level of Baghdad Bob about it.
Actually, its very simple. If this was a brochure, then there should be a copy of it. If you can find one, I’ll believe it. The only “Proof” is actual evidence. Not something someone wrote on the internet.
And we can recognize that we made a mistake. Which is step one in never repeating it. It seems many just want to pretend their mistakes don’t have consequences.
People who forget their history are doomed to repeat it. People who intentionally ignore it will suffer the same.
Let’s scream where the screaming counts. To the Lord for salvation. Personal as needed, and then in our circumstances as He will give us power to minister.
Tell it to someone that cares.
The lesson can come in a flash. Wallowing in it without pointing to what should come next (like you are doing) is counterproductive and an indulgence in the vain pleasures of blame casting.
Yes! Tell it to the Lord!
Which is really my point. God ain’t forgiving anyone their sins when they deny them.
link. See page 10:
I do, however, find it quite disturbing that millions of young girls are out peddling overpriced cookies to fund the retirement plans for hundreds of old lesbians. The federal bailout proposal is next i suppose.
see post #37.
Everyone harbors a vast host of sins. If God waited for a full confession of all sin to happen before accepting one who knows he is a sinner for salvation... nobody would get accepted. Just the need as a sinner requires acknowledgment, and the faith that the merciful Lord will help them get their life right.
Get off your hobby horse of condemnation and start pointing to the Lord.
