Video at clip. One of those rare times when Bill Maher actually makes sense. Especially around 3:02 in the vid where he exposes Bob Herbert's hypocrisy when he asks if the n-word should be banned from rap music. IMO, say what you may about Lenny Bruce with his drugging and potty mouth humor, but this routine goes to show that words are "hurtful" only if we let them be hurtful.

One of those rare times when Bill Maher actually makes sense.

Only because it's self-serving.

Maher's is actually preemptively defending his future "privilege" to call Sarah Palin a c*** and tweets like, “Wow, Jesus just f*cked #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere in hell Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler ‘Hey, Buffalo’s killing them’”

I'd like to know why the single word "n*gger" is more offensive than the above. ANYBODY??

maybe he can sign her onto his show and have her do a ‘sensitivity’ segment from the kitchen.

Paula Dean has her own magazine and restaurant and various cooking tools have her name on them.

She didn't say that word on TV. She said it in a joke that a white worker heard so no black person was involved. She is 66 and grew up in Georgia where that word was used back then and she admitted she said that word to her husband one time in those days when she was attacked by a black person.

If I had been attacked, I surely might use that word when I got home, just like she did.

My mother grew up in the 1800s in Arkansas and that word was the only word they used in those days and she never stopped identifying blacks in any other way. It was just an English word she used for identification. I heard that word during all my growing up and I never used the word just because I don't know why. I think I used colored in those earlier days of my live. Then, at some point, the word colored changed maybe to African American. Then, black was used.

Since my mother didn't know another word to use, I guess she should have been sent to prison.

I don't give a flip which word is used and it's too bad about Paula - they should not have fired her.

It is moments like this, which give me a small degree of hope, for our future.

Right now, America is in the grip of a monopolistic bunch of self-serving media dolts.

Less so than it used to be, but still the media is a force - and since they are not in the middle of the road politically, they are a force against good.

Currently the media operates in lockstep. Observe the nightly news shows. The three of them, on “networks” for example. All are identical.

The same crews, all cover the exact same handful of stories, night after night. Just as bad is that local networks also cover another same handful of stories.

Not only that, but they cover the handful of stories, with the same SLANT. National and local.

Now with Fox, there is a shard of balance, but still our media operates as one gigantic thought.

To the extent outsiders are ever more excluded - the circle actually served by the news, shrinks ever smaller.

In this case, Maher is absolutely right.

He’s usually so wrong, so as to render his view somewhat moot. But on this he’s right.

Good job just this once, Maher.

Maher makes sense but only because a fellow liberal (in this case, Paula Deen) is being skewered.

Remember Tracy Morgan?

Pet peeve of mine—the guy talked about STABBING HIS SON TO DEATH if the child were homosexual—and after a shaking finger talking down by Tina Fey, all was forgotten and forgiven.

Let ONE conservative say what Tracy Morgan said (they wouldn’t because that isn’t how they think), and hellfire from the media would rain down on them forevermore.

I was raised in the South before and during the civil rights era. My father very carefully instructed me in proper comportment, to include the knowledge that the use of certain words to attack or insult someone would result in severe repercussions. The first, was to be a thorough washing of the mouth with soap. He meant it. Without question. He then proceeded to tell me those words, and their meaning. Ms. Dean obviously didn’t listen to her daddy.

Paula is a lib. Probably voted for mulatto son.....twice. But she did out mooshellini as a non stop eater...which more than likely sealed her fate. Not only does her gig at FN end, her magazines, cookbooks, restaurants, pushing hams from Smithfield (now a CHINESE company) these go down the tubes as well. Not that she was right/wrong....but this is (sorry) WAS America and we at one time did have freedom to speak however we wished, ya’ll

I used the keyword to obtain more information. What surprised me and I concede I am often slow on the uptake, is this. Freeper RedCap had posted an item from the Chicago Tribune dated March 7th 2012. I learned from that item that one Lisa T. Jackson, a former manager of "one of five restaurants in Deen's group" was suing for various reasons.

It was more concerning Deen's brother "Bubba" Hiers, than Paula. He was said to have been sexually improper etc. Lisa then brought up the use of that word by Paula.

What I cannot figure is why it took so long (27 months),before the ordure hit the fan on this business? Can there be a specific group out there who drum up these things and then sit back and exult in the personal anguish of someone?.

words are "hurtful" only if we let them be hurtful

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

My grandmother told me that over and over when I was an easily-offended teen. It stuck. And now, evidently, it's not true.
