A Texas school district has apologized to a high school valedictorian whose appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy was threatened after he delivered a speech that referenced God and the U.S. Constitution in defiance of district policies.
(snip)
Fran Merek, the superintendent of the Joshua Independent School District, issued a carefully worded statement apologizing for the incident.
On behalf of the school district, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Mr. Todd Reimer and Remington Reimer for any interpretation of a threat by Mr. Cochran in expressing his displeasure at a meeting on Friday morning between Mr. Todd Reimer and Mr. Cochran following Remington Reimers valedictory address, Marek wrote in a statement. The District has never intended to nor will take punitive action against Remington Reimer for deviating from the prior-reviewed speech. The District endorses Remington Reimers appointment to the Naval Academy and wishes him success for all future endeavors in his naval career. District officials will ensure that district policy is followed at future graduation ceremonies.

If I were the father, this would not cut it for me.
The classic liberal non-apology apology
If the lad is admitted to the academy, the issue is settled.
Yeah, and then in the very last statement, they promise to do it again to any other student who dares to express free thought on God and the Constitution.
WHAT first ammendment ?
I'd sue the principal and the school district for destroying his naval career before it even started.
If Texas had the guts to rid ourselves of countless superintendents per school district to one per county we would have a better system. Not to mention cost per property tax needs to support said Superintendents.
The entire administration should be fired and blackballed. Thanks Timber Rattler.
No question about it.
This principal would never own a piece of property or hold a job in education again.
Not long ago, this sort of double-speak would have been expected in New York or Boston, but Texas would never have tolerated it. Today, it seems to be the best we can do in flyover country.
Texans are ashamed of the Joshua government indoctrination center run by statist nazis. Everyone on that school board should be voted out if the offensive principal and superintendent are not fired. Davy Crockett and William B. Travis are rolling over in their graves.
Wrong,The issue will not be settled because the A-holes that initiated it need to be held accountable for the attempt to ruin the lads future. They ran into the wrong parents this time. What has transpired before this and after with this school board.
Parents should kick back get a powerfull legal force ready, let him get in the academy, and then go for it.
That is not an apology.
I’m not sure what it is, but it is not an apology.
IMHO someone needs to lose their job over this. This was a serious threat to an American citizen First Amendment right. Personally I feel the family should not let this go so easily but it’s not up to me. Just my two-cents worth.
The locals need to rise up and run this turkey out of town on a rail right after having doused him with hot tar and feathers.
I agree, the school board should be held accountable for not taking action against the principal. But the last thing a potential freshman needs as he arrives at the Naval Academy is a lot of legal baggage.
Has the school board taken any corrective action? Have misbehaving school personnel been punished? If a kid is bad, punishment is administered. I hope!
Lousy sentence structure, too. I guess we should not be surprised that the students can’t read or write, with this quality coming from an administrator.
He can keep his job, after they keelhaul him.
After that it's unlikely he would cause any more trouble.
He has the appointment, reports in next week, and there's nothing the principal and school district can do about it except act like cry babies. If the Naval Academy staff is anything like my classmates from Air Force they're probably having a good laugh about the whole thing and looking forward to the induction of a new midshipman that has shown he has a spine.
