Priests to Pelosi: condemn abortion or leave the Church

A pro-life group called on California Democrat Rep. Nancy Pelosi to “exercise your duties as a public servant and a Catholic, or have the honesty to formally renounce them,” in a widely-circulated open letter Wednesday.

“Public servants are supposed to be able to tell the difference between serving the public and killing the public. Apparently, you can’t,” wrote national director of Priests for Life Father Frank Pavone. “Otherwise, you would have been able to explain the difference between a legal medical procedure that kills a baby inside the womb and an act of murder.”

Pavone’s letter was written in response to the Minority Leader’s argument with a reporter — The Weekly Standard asked Pelosi to clarify her position on abortion in the wake of the Kermit Gosnell case during a press conference Thursday.

“What is the moral difference between what Dr. Gosnell did to a baby born alive at 23 weeks and aborting her moments before birth?” the reporter asked.

Pelosi dismissed the question and equated Gosnell’s crimes with pro-life activists’ condemnation of abortion.

“What was done in Philadelphia was reprehensible and everybody condemned it. For them to decide to disrespect a judgment a woman makes about her reproductive health is reprehensible,” she said. “Next question.”

When pressed for an answer, Pelosi pushed back harder, telling the reporter abortion should not be a political matter.

“As a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this. I don’t think it should have anything to do with politics. And that’s where you’re taking it and I’m not going there,” Pelosi said, according to the press conference transcript.

In response to Pelosi, Pavone wrote that Pelosi’s answer violated both her duties as a public servant and a practicing Catholic.

“Abortion is not sacred ground; it is sacrilegious ground. To imagine God giving the slightest approval to an act that dismembers a child he created is offensive to both faith and reason,” Pavone wrote. “And to say that a question about the difference between a legal medical procedure and murder should not ‘have anything to do with politics’ reveals a profound failure to understand your own political responsibilities, which start with the duty to secure the God-given right to life of every citizen.”

“Whatever Catholic faith you claim to respect and practice, it is not the faith that the Catholic Church teaches,” Pavone continued. “And I speak for countless Catholics when I say that it’s time for you to stop speaking as if it were.”

Nancy Pants left the Catholic Church many years ago. She just needs the fig leaf because there are so many Catholic voters.

I wholeheartedly disagree. The libs are not relying on the Catholic Church for votes. They worship at the church of the state and have nothing but disdain for people of faith - they look down their noses at the faithful. They maintain power despite their proclamations of faith, not because of it. Somewhere in the back of their minds, I think they may believe that holding onto a glimmer of connection to the church may spare their souls when their ticket is punched.

Thank You little jeremiah for the ping. What I have to type may not be popular though. For the Church to remain relevant the Church must strand for what is right and are the words of God which was rewritten by man. Man has flaws, therefore the Book of God may contain flaws. This is not the time or place to argue what I perceive maybe are flaws but will stand on earlier sentence ... For the Church to remain relevant the Church must strand for what is right and are the words of God. Therein lays the fall of the Bride of Christ wherein the words of God are not adhered to.

Just wait till the new rules go out to the Church. Then the strand verses stand will be made clear. The pattern has been to turn the other cheek so that cheek too could be slapped. Will probably be the course taken again by many whom want to be known as the Church. On the other hand or cheek is there a strange wind blowing?

Why can't parishioners just form a human circle around the altar to prevent her from receiving the Eucharist...or at the very least make it known that her "brand" of catholicism does not belong.

Pelosi was re-elected in 2012 with 85.1% of the vote. They wouldn't do it because they agree with her.

Excommunitate Jimmy Carter?!?!?!?

But, but, he's one of the folks who guide the flock.

I've been amazed at the number of folks who say they're conservative "Evangelicals" or Baptists and who defend Jimmy Carter to this day as a great Christian leader.

How they can actually believe that, I don't know. Maybe they just can't admit they made a huge mistake when they worked to help him get elected and cheered him on even while he was obviously shafting the country.

Perhaps, Pelosi, should be asked to come back to the Church. It may be a foregone conclusion, that Nan, is not a member of the Church. Just sayin’

The church believes that when they excommunicate someone, they are literally condemning that person to hell.

Unless she repents, he actions are condemning her to hell.

the Church needs to look at the effect that Nancy Pelosi has on the souls of others

Right! Have the Bishops considered how many souls are being lost because of the "witness" of this woman?

damn Nancy Pelosi to limit the damage she can cause to other souls.

I agree!

Abortion is one of Nan’s most holy sacraments. Killing babies is a “sacred” right, according to SanFranNan. (I never heard the dark side admit that before. )

In the eyes of Fr. Pavone, this is NOT PR. I know him. I am positive he agrees with all of us that this witch needs to be excommunicated publicly.

I will agree that he does not think it is PR. In fact, I will admit that perhaps he sees it as his sacred duty in the face of a hierarchy that steadfastly does nothing to hold prominent Catholics to account.
