I don’t think that it was friendly fire, even if we were out there. But I suspect that the reason they were doing live fire exercises out there (which actually couldn’t reach as high as the plane, from what I recall reading at the time) was that there had been some kind of a warning or alert, and this was meant to scare off the terrorists or at least show them we were onto them.

Obviously, it didn’t; for one thing, they weren’t even doing it at the time that the plane was struck, and I’m sure the jihadis knew when they’d be safe. I’ve never been sure whether this was launched from the shore or from a boat, however. They found something that looked like the remains of a tripod (not necessary for a MANPAD, but helpful) in the dunes behind Jones Beach, IIRC, but they said it was for “large fireworks.”

Another thing that I recall reading was that normally, an El Al flight left at that time. For some reason, it was delayed and Flight 800 took its place in the line-up.

I think this was a carefully planned attack.

Sigh.

If the official cause of the disaster is to be discarded, then what destroyed the plane?

Specifically: What type of missile? What are the range and warhead types of said missile? Has such a missile ever, before or since TWA 800 managed to bring down a comparable aircraft?

Fox News is also covering up for the govt....based on their reports....no surprise from Liberal Fox News

The CIA wants you to believe that a plane missing its fuselage will still climb thousands of feet.....BS

A missle shot down TWA Flt 800.....That is a Statement of Fact

Liquid fuel vapors will only combust within a certain range of concentrations; too “lean”, they won’t burn, too “rich”, they won’t burn.

Remember “flooded carburetors”? Too rich a mixture. .....

I was a GM mechanic from the late 60s until I joined the national guard exactly 41 years ago today. We used to take a pan of gasoline and throw lit matches into it and they would go out. Then we put a fan on one side of the pan and the vapors would explode.

anti-aircraft missiles continue to burn fuel in their primary rocket motors throughout the flight envelope.

Not all missiles.

I don't know about the "PAC-3" PATRIOT missiles, but the original version had a motor that burned for about six seconds. On a long-range engagement, the flight could last several minutes.

A more likely contender would be a U.S. Navy Standard missile. Burn time is listed as 6 seconds too, for the BOOSTER. Primary motor burn is about 260 seconds.

Either way, a nighttime missile launch is not a stealthy event.

I would think that the air in any fuel tank would have about as much fuel vaporized into it as physically possible ... therefore, how could it ignite?

I suppose you could blow up a diesel fuel tank.....WITH A CUTTING TORCH!

Jet fuel has lower vapor pressure than gasoline.

You are talking about Kerosene aren't you?

So you think the Obamatrons are behind the documentary, too?

“You are talking about Kerosene aren’t you?”

Kerosine, Jet-A, JP-5

I once got the physical properties specification sheet from Shell. Kerosine & Jet-A were identical to three decimal places, in those properties listed for both.

Obviously, Jet-A had additives and a much better clean container/pipeline than Kerosine.

After 17 years, it’s got to be Obamatollah behind the documentary.

Rand Paul isn’t clever or dirty enough to pull that (unfortunately).

The wife of a friend of mine was a flight attendant for TWA at the time of the crash. She was actually supposed to be on that flight, but another attendant wanted to trade with her so she could have a long weekend in Paris.

She and a number of other TWA employees quit when the company refused to tell them exactly what happened. She says that some of the senior officials admitted that things were being covered up, but refused to give details, so she and the others walked.

If you want to read an interesting novel dealing with Flight 800, I recommend Nelson DeMille's Night Fall.

The consortium behind the documentary:

“Epix (pronounced “epics”) is an American hybrid television premium channel and subscription video on demand service that is operated by Studio 3 Partners – a joint venture of Viacom (specifically its subdivision Paramount Pictures), Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Lions Gate Entertainment. Viacom handles operational support for the channel, including marketing and affiliate services, through its Viacom Media Networks division. The television channel features theatrically released motion pictures, documentaries, concert and comedy specials, boxing matches and mixed martial arts events.”
