Unfortunately, the death of Vince Flynn pre-empted the mention. Two sad passages, and losses for all of us.

If I recall correctly, Slim was phenomenally popular in the U.K. too.
My dad had his records.
Indian Love Call
Rose Marie....

RIP Slim.

Slim Whitman lived a full life.

I remember around 1982 the first `infomercials’ among which was Slim’s greatest hits & that he was America’s best known country singer - in U.K.!

In 1990 Rush Limbaugh did his famous `satanic message’ bit with “Una Paloma Blanca”. The demonic growls were priceless:

“Beelzebub!! Yes, it’s me the old Devil himself! You found me out, you little rascal, lurking right here in the Slim Whitman record grooves!

“By the way, where’d ya find a turntable that plays backwards like this? I’ve been searching for these for all my disciples so that they can go around corrupting the youth of America, and we can’t find these backward turntables anywhere except in ministers’ houses! And of course we don’t like to go there very often, bwa ha!

“Maybe you could drop me a note and tell me where to get one of these, and I promise I would never forget ya!

“Well, gotta be going on down the line! Waaaaaay down the line if ya know what I mean, bwa ha! Yeah. See you later!

Wonder what Slim thought of Rush’s little joke?

A personage of American music has passed on. RIP.

Well, he WAS the victim of a death hoax about five years ago. The Tennessean even published his obit. IIRC he actually called them up and said “Hey, I’m not dead!”

Well, we recently lost George Jones and Jack Greene, so Slim completes the three. Sure hope so, we need a break for awhile. We still have to worry about Ray Price and Glen Campbell.

Frank Ifield’s version of this song is better, but Frank has always acknowledged Slim as an influence.
