Something about “tear down this wall!” is memorable.
Moreso than “Ich bin ein Berliner” (”I am a jelly donut”, when he probably meant to say “ I am (born from) Berlin(-er) (German)”
(were the 450,000 in attendance laughing at him when he used the indefinite article, thinking to themselves,...”Well you don’t look like a jelly donut,...chuckle, chuckle,..applause for the guy who means well but doesn’t get it.....)

No. West Berliners in 1963 absolutely got what Kennedy meant. They didn't care about the jelly donut pun. Those were times when they could see Soviet tanks across the street, with main guns aimed at them, and border guards with submachine guns glaring at them from the barricade. It was a different time and a different world.

I guarantee you the residents of Berlin today, liberal as they may be, place a lot more importance on “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” than they ever did on “”Ich bin ein Berliner.” But they don’t work for AssPress of course.
