O'REILLY: "Personal Story" segment tonight. CBS News announced on Friday that Investigative Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson's computer was hacked into late last year. This, combined with the James Rosen situation here at Fox News and the A.P. snooping, causing a lot of concern.
With us now on a Factor Cable Exclusive is Ms. Attkisson. So, when did you know that somebody was messing with your computer.
SHARYL ATTKISSON, INVESTIGATIVE CORRESPONDENT, CBS NEWS: Well, there were signs probably around 2011 but I don't think I recognized exactly what was going on until perhaps the fall of last year when so many things were happening in the Attkisson household, so many of sort of strange electronic related things that --
O'REILLY: Give me an example because I don't know anything about computers. Give me an example.
ATTKISSON: I know very little, too. But the computers coming on by themselves at night. My personal Apple desktop as well as my CBS --
O'REILLY: -- disappearing. You weren't even there, just popped on.
ATTKISSON: Right.
O'REILLY: OK.
ATTKISSON: I mean I was sleeping. So, they would come on in the middle of the night, sometimes one right after the other. By the time last fall came around, they would sometimes both be starting up kind of a cacophony of computer music at night, in the middle of the night.
O'REILLY: So, you had a personal and you had a business computer. And they both came on. Sounds like poltergeist.

Sounds like this was going on for a while. Why didn't she just start unplugging the computers (or removing the battery) before she went to bed at night?
Probably because she wasn’t paranoid enough to realize what was actually happening.

If you have automatic updates turned on the PC will wake up to download the updates. Other installed software, such as anti-virus, may also be updating.
It sounds like she was more concerned about collecting relevant evidence than being sleep disturbed.
Let us all remember, in late 2011, what Attkisson was told over a phone conversation with White House and DOJ representatives while Attkisson was doing her investigation into Fast & Furious:
“They will tell you that I’m the only reporter, as they told me, that is not reasonable. They say The Washington Post is reasonable, the LA Times is reasonable, The New York Times is reasonable — I’m the only one who thinks this is a story, and they think I’m unfair and biased by pursuing it.”

Sure. I don’t know about Windows, but Macs have an “Energy Saver” control panel that you can set to startup every day at 7:00 AM or Thursdays at noon or whatever.

You can have the computer wake up and defragment the hard drive, virus scans, lots of maintenance items at a scheduled time.
I am a IT guy and we can turn on PC’s to apply never ending patches all the time but they have to be set up to allow it. If her personal Mac is starting up without her setting it up ahead of a very suspicious proposition. The Mac remote software for technical reasons usually will not work from outside if its home network. If her Mac is indeed “haunted” it is suspicious..very suspicious. I put nothing past Obama’s goons, nothing.

Oops, make that- If her personal Mac is starting up without her setting it up to allow it ahead of time it is a very suspicious proposition.

If a computer that has automatic restart in case of power failure enabled(usually found in BIOS) ,loses power for a second ,it will then start up by itself on return of power. There are a lot more interruptions of electric power than most people notice;most are very brief.
Secondly,when setting up network connections there is an option ,usually already checked,that referrs to “have computer wake up froim network access” or a similar phrase.If that isn’t “unchecked” by the computer owner or someone with administrator privileges then a network request can start up the computer.
Using one’s computer for routine tasks logged in with account having full administrator privileges rather than a user account with limited privileges leaves the computer more vulnerable to hacking.Admittedly a limited account can be aggravating IF you do a lot of downloading and software installtion,which most users don’t.
Leaving one’s computer on and logged in to the company or other sites full-time may be convenient or necessary but not really needed for most people.
People SHOULD be aware that cameras and microphones built in or connected to the computer and software controlled can be remotely hacked and turned on allowing remote operators to see and hear what is near the computer !!!(This has been demonstrated in the case of the Pennsylvania school that spied on teenagers in their homes.that those who approved and did the spying haven’t been tried,convicted, and hanged for their crimes shows how Americans no longer value freedom._
Unplugging the network cable prevents outside hackers unless you have wifi or wireless turned on.IF you have the wireless also disabled then hackers are shut out.
You can/could/should? have a opaque cover to block computer cameras and someting to block the microphone as well IF you are concerned.
Connecting physical cables and disabling/enabling wireless only when you are actually using remote networks is one security measure;like having locks on your doors ,it may be less convenient for you but stops others.
The wireless computerized conveniences we enjoy CAN be mis-used to spy on us.

That's the first instinct of any good bureaucrat: Claim you are "the only one" to complain when you gripe at something they've done. I've seen managers do it at a large company for whom I worked. Schools do it to parents all the time. They'll stick with the lie even if you call them on it, feigning ignorance. If there's one thing all bureaucrats and managers know how to do it's feign ignorance.
