As one who was assigned to several Army hospitals during the Vietnam era (but not in SE Asia,I never served there) I’m somewhat familiar with the stories of *Army* medics in combat.I haven’t the slightest doubt that the Navy corpsman is every bit as skilled, brave and dedicated as is his Army counterpart.I once read that Marine General “Chesty” Puller once said “you guys are the Marine’s doctors; there’s no better in the business than a Navy Corpsman....”.If my sense of the typical Marine General is correct that sounds like mighty high praise (and gratitude) indeed.

I have vivid memories of teaching Independent Duty Corpsmen how to do an emergency appendectomy-—before they were depoloyed to a sub or aboard ship in the 70s....I will never forget the “WTF????” look in their eyes on the first day of class...and their “DAMN, I CAN do this!” look in their eyes after they completed their testing......TRULY our Marines were in good hands!!!!!!!!!

I was medevacked through 95th Evac Hospital (Army) in Danang and underwent my initial wound debridement there. I received excellent treatment there, as I did on every step of the passage back to the States.
